Welcome to my Pinkerlocke thread! I’ve been planning to start one of these threads for a long time. My plan is to track all the items I get from Pinkerton for a set period of time, beginning on my birthday (which was April 4) and ending during the Fire festival this year (or when all my Pinkerlocke dragons die, whichever comes first), and update this thread as I have time to complete the prescribed tasks and post my results.
The rule that I use to guide my posting in this thread is: Post completed material at the point where it contributes to the flow of the story. That's why not all of my posts are in the same order in which I got the corresponding items from Pinkerton. I am keeping track of which items I've gotten, and which ones I have and haven't posted about yet, on this Google Sheet. (Please note that I am also keeping notes on upcoming story developments on that sheet, so spoilers ahoy!)
I will be following the main Pinkerlocke rules, using a subgroup of dragons I already have in my lair that I set aside in advance for this story. See the Starting Characters post below for their backstories.
In addition to this thread, I also maintain a personal offspring list challenge thread, The Elements, and a 100 Hatchling Challenge lore thread. There might be some crossover among the three, but you won’t have to follow either of the other two to understand this story.

Ember
Ember was one of the four hatchlings who was hatched on the Day of the Rainbow Bridges, when her clan was celebrating the appearance of new colors on dragons. All her life, she has been fascinated by the two Coatls in the clan, Valtane and Carl. She's always thought they were so much cooler and more interesting than boring old Mirrors, and she decided early on that when she grew up, she wanted to be a Coatl and a blacksmith. She's as passionate and enthusiastic as any Fire dragon, but she also possesses the Wind Flight's love of adventure, exploration, and maps. She believes that if she is brave, strong, adventurous, and passionate enough to survive her journey to the Ashfall Waste, she will have earned the right to invoke the powers of a Coatl scroll by the time she arrives there.

Starbloom
Starbloom was also hatched when Clan Adeptica was celebrating a special occasion: their second Starfall Celebration, and their move to the mountain caves below the Observatory. The clan’s new Enchanting Goblin was drawn to Starbloom almost immediately, even though she was still a hatchling, and they’ve been close companions ever since. Starbloom also grew to be a good friend of Ember’s, and was the first to be invited along on Ember’s journey to the Starfall Isles.

Felicity
Felicity is unusually brave for a Pearlcatcher, and her role in Clan Adeptica is that of a spy and scout. Her dark coloration makes it easy for her to patrol the clan’s borders for potential incursions by Beastclans or meteor-riding aliens. She reports her findings back to Talia, the clan’s battlemistress.
Socially, Felicity has always found herself drawn to the clan's more eccentric members: Mopsy, the lone Ridgeback, Valtane, the more outgoing of the two Coatls, and Ember, the wannabe-Coatl. She also has a bit of a rebellious streak, preferring to do her own thing in her own way. Thanks to her friendship with Ember, Felicity was the third dragon whom Ember invited to come along with her on her journey.

They had put her in a basket and sent it out to sea so that their clan would have at least one survivor.

The Rainbow Bridges had faded from the sky, but their effects would be felt for all time. Hatchlings now came in more shades of more colors than ever before. Two of the four hatchlings who were now growing up within Clan Adeptica - Sahara, Delphinia, Agrest, and Ember - stood as living testaments to this new reality.
All four of them had adoptive parents, but as the saying went, it took a clan to raise a hatchling. In Clan Adeptica, this was true every time. Delphinia and Agrest learned the art of cultivation from Magatama, and the two Mirror girls, Sahara and Ember, learned the ways of Mirror dragons from Jareth and Fever. Ember, the youngest of the four (even if only by a few minutes), was also the most curious, and took advantage of every opportunity she could to make new friends.
Apart from her parents, Thundercloud and Flamestrike, the adults with whom Ember spent the most time were Randi and Valtane. She was fascinated by the strange way they spoke to each other, and picked up enough Coatl to carry on a very general conversation. When she was old enough to understand, Randi told her the story of how they had met - Randi had found him after Valtane was rejected by his own kind because of his pale coloring, which just happened to match Randi’s own so well. Ember was shocked that anyone could treat such a kind dragon so cruelly. Randi explained that it was only a superstition; Coatls believed that dull, pale colors indicated ill health and ill fortune, but as far as she knew, it wasn’t actually true.
<<You would fit in very well in the Ashfall Waste,>> Valtane told her in Coatl. <<You’re the color of the fire in a low-banked forge. You’re very fortunate.>>
Valtane's words rang true. Ember knew she was different from them, her parents, and most of the rest of the clan. She was a Fire dragon, and thanks to the other Fire dragons in the clan, like Torger, Phoenix, Mopsy, and Liam, she considered herself fortunate to be one. They showed her how to spark a fire using only her magic, something only dragons of their element could do, and which made them highly valuable to the clan.
As Ember grew up, she used her knowledge of Coatl to become friends with Carl, the clan’s other Coatl. By the time she was full-grown, she could serve as a second interpreter, taking some of the burden off of Randi and helping both Carl and Valtane get along better with their clanmates. The more she learned of the language, the more she loved the idea of the Ashfall Waste, and she made up her mind that one day, she was going to move there and become a Coatl.

Time passed. Clan Adeptica continued to grow, and took its place among the most ancient clans of the Starfall Isles. The clan moved into their new lair in the neighborhood just under the Observatory right at the beginning of their second Starfall Celebration. To celebrate, they hatched two eggs: a Fae named Starbloom, and the clan’s very first Bogsneak, Belladonna. Ember herself had come from an egg that had been hatched in celebration, and she became good friends with the two.
Ember’s passionate yearning to go out and see the world rubbed off on the two younger dragons, but more so on Starbloom, it seemed; Belladonna was closer to the clan’s alchemists. Together, Ember and Starbloom planned an elaborate route for their journey, one that would take them through all the elemental realms except for the Southern Icefields and the Windswept Plateau, and that would finally bring them to the Ashfall Waste during its festival. The two girls would spend hours talking about what the journey would be like, the new lair they would build in the Fire realm, and the vacations they would take to the realms of Wind and Ice after they had settled down in their new home. Ember hoped to prove herself worthy of her element by exemplifying the values of the Fire Flight - passion, bravery, and industriousness - during her journey. She believed that if she did, the Flamecaller would take note of her actions and she would earn the privilege of being transformed into a Coatl by the time she arrived in the Ashfall Waste.
Ember’s interests and plans gradually became known to others in the clan, who received the news unevenly. There were some, such as Torger, who thought she was being ridiculous. Any idiot with enough gems could get their claws on a Breed Change scroll, they pointed out. Why go on some foolhardy, idealistic crusade when she could achieve the same end simply by earning her fortune like a normal craftsdragon? Torger, one of the clan’s oldest Fire dragons, gave Ember lessons in how to work a forge and make things out of metal, so that she could earn her Coatl scroll the realistic way. They liked each other, so Ember took the lessons to heart and appreciated them, but she kept her ideals alive just the same. She took to wearing an ivory aviator scarf as a symbol of her thirst for adventure.
Besides Starbloom, the only other dragon who completely supported Ember's grand plan was the clan’s border scout and spy, Felicity. She encouraged Ember's desire to improve herself and learn and remember all she could, as one might expect from a Pearlcatcher. However, she also harbored a rebellious streak, borne of her paternal grandmother’s exile from Clan Adeptica for causing an accidental death via an ill-fated magical experiment. Felicity liked the idea of striking out from the clan to see the world and, ultimately, to start their own clan. Soon, she was accepted as part of the trio who would be going together on the grand journey.
The three friends planned to leave on a particular day in the spring, one on which Darkstar (the clan mystic and stargazer) said that the stars would be aligned. As the day drew nearer, Jareth made an effort to impart as much survival wisdom as he could to the three, but especially to Ember. After all, she would have to survive as a Mirror for however long it took her to get to the Ashfall Waste.

“Miss Ember?” chirped a metallic voice.
Ember looked down to see that a red Sentinel Mith was speaking to her. “Yes?” she said.
“I have been sent by my master, Vader. He would like to have a word with you. Would you come with me, please?”
“All right,” said Ember.
The little Mith led Ember through the labyrinthine caverns of Clan Adeptica’s home, into the depths that were favored by those clan members who preferred solitude over socialization. She couldn’t begin to imagine why the reclusive Imperial would wish to speak with her.
“Ember has arrived,” the Mith announced, leading her into the Imperial’s lair.
The light from the few glowing pocket baubles in the room caught the imposing dragon’s crystalline, obsidian skin and polished black samurai helmet. “Hello, Ember,” Vader said to her as she entered, in a voice as deep as the darkness around them. “Thank you for coming.”
“You’re… welcome?” she said. He was more polite than she had expected him to be. “You wanted to speak with me?”
“Yes. I have had… a premonition about your journey.”
“Premonition? Aren’t you Light? I thought only Water dragons could see the future.”
“I am, yes, but I also belong to the Sith subset of Force-Sensitives. For us, the path lies open to many abilities some would consider… unnatural.” Ember thought she saw the Imperial shudder slightly – and was that a look of… disgust? Hatred? It passed too quickly for Ember to tell, and she decided not to ask him about it. Instead, she said, “What was it?”
“Only this: You take your life in your claws by traveling to the Ashfall Waste,” Vader said. “The Volcanic Vents are especially dangerous. For your own sake, you must never go there. Nothing awaits you there but pain and despair.”
Ember was worried, but surprised and touched by his concern for her. She cocked her head sideways in thought for a moment, but found her resolve was undiminished. “I understand the danger, but I refuse to let that, or anything else, stop me from going on this journey,” she said. “I am a Fire dragon. All I want in life is to return to my Flight’s homeland and live as one of the Flamecaller’s creations. Maybe I’ll even find my biological parents.”
“At least one of whom is also a Mirror.”
“I know, but it’s at least possible that the other could be a Coatl. And even if not, I still think they’re amazing and want to be one. I’ll try to stay away from the Volcanic Vents when I get there, but I can’t promise you anything. I will have to fight to survive out there, after all.”
Vader nodded his whiskered head. “If you must go, do not go alone. Bring friends with you, if you can. And be faithful to them.”
“I will. Starbloom and Felicity are my best friends. They’re coming with me.”
“Good. Keep each other safe. May the Force be with you.”
“Thank you. You, too.” She sensed that that meant he had said all he had to say, and she turned to leave. The Sentinel Mith led her back to the main area of the lair.

The day that the three friends had chosen to begin their journey came even closer. One day, Ember spotted Starbloom leaving the clan’s vault with a floating, dark-purple sphere. “Starbloom?” Ember asked. “Where are you going with that?”
“To the nesting grounds,” Starbloom answered. “The day we depart from here will be a momentous occasion. I was hatched in honor of such an occasion myself, and I intend to do the same with this egg.”
“What?” Ember said. “Are you out of your Fae mind?”
“What do you mean?”
“You can’t bring a new hatchling traveling with us! What if it’s a Tundra, or another Fae? It’ll die before it even has a chance to grow up!”
“Not necessarily. Many other new hatchlings have survived similar journeys. I believe we should speak with Fluorine. She has traveled long distances with her own new hatchlings on numerous occasions, and they have all survived the journey back here.”
“You’re right. Let's do that.”
After Starbloom had gotten the orphaned egg settled into one of the clan’s nests, the two friends went to find Fluorine. The iridescent Spiral was only too happy to share her expertise on the subject of raising hatchlings while on the go. Before she began, she went and found Reina, her protege and friend, who would be starting her own travels soon and who also needed to learn the ropes.
Fluorine explained to the assembled future travelers that on all her journeys, she always carried a patchwork sling made of scraps of canvas. She used it to carry her new hatchlings with her when she needed to fly a long distance. This was in addition to the bags she carried food and supplies in; she advised the new travelers to go to Shadowspell and ask for any canvas and fabric scraps he might have saved up, so that they could start making their own bags and slings for their journey.
The four of them went to the clan’s main communal storeroom together. Shadowspell gave them a generous supply of fabric, canvas, and waterskins. Fluorine, Ember, Starbloom, and Reina spent the rest of the afternoon sewing fabric and canvas scraps together to make slings and traveling bags.
