there's a saying about that forest, across the river.[/i] like most sayings, it is fraught with exaggeration, myth, and weaved embellishments so surreal and unbelievable that it becomes truth.
the hatchlings who will grow up in the viridian labyrinth only hear of its tale from the hushed whispers of their nurse’s friends, the gossip of the adults. [i]don’t go there,[/i] they’ll say, answer, when the hatchlings ask. [i]they’ll swallow you whole and you’ll never come back.

this, is fact: the forest across the river at the base of the behemoth houses a small clan of dreams, a mythical wonderland strung with golden lanterns. the flowers there gleam only at night, when the bio-luminescence of their flora unfurl and spin. the water sings songs there when the dragons dance upon its surface, draw half-moons with their feet, let the bells of their silk jingle with their steps.
this, is also fact: no dragon who enters has ever come back.
perhaps they die there, alone, calling for help from their clans that are seemingly eons away. perhaps they leave there, and go on into the world in inspiration. or perhaps they stay there, in the world of glowing gold, afraid to leave its beauty.
some days, if you listen close enough, you can hear the singing of the water, of the matriarch, of each note that resonates quietly through the river as if intending to carry it into the rest of the labyrinth, and—

On silent nights, it is the only thing one hears, the quiet plucked strings of a [url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qmbxge3rxgs]guqin [/url]reverberating through the wood as deeply as it does throughout the rest of the clan.
Here lies the Matriarch and her palace, enclosed and embraced by the other wings that huddle around its heart so fervently like a child to his mother. Its doors are always open, no matter the time, nor the trouble, or lack thereof. Here, the sun seems to shine through the thick leaves of the canopy above—shining, because of the Matriarch's smile, the quirk of her lips, the gleam of her eyes.
It is always night time when someone visits, always lit by the soft glow of lotusi and lanterns along the river that flows right through the middle of the clan's territory, the middle of the clan's heart.
Here, serenity can be found in the folds of the flowers, the extravagance of the palace, the drum that beats in quiet notes as the Matriarch spins her dance atop the river's surface. Those who serve her are those who have known her for longer, have seen the clan rise from roots to steams to leaves.
(Those who serve her have seen everything that was before, stained like red blood on white fabric, but the river never runs pink with their hands. The sins, though, they remain.)
Here lies serenity, colored midnight.
