NOTE: THIS LOREBOOK IS BEING UPDATED CONSTANTLY. It's still unfinished, but feel free to comment!

Reason for move wrote:
By request, I'm moving my lore from my profile page to a lorebook for easier accessibility. It's largely a work in progress and will likely remain that way for a long time. Feel free to comment on it, offer constructive criticism, ask questions, etc. Thank you for taking the time to read the lore of the Lunate clan!

Origins of the name Lunate wrote:
The Lunate Clan was named after a peculiar, somewhat crescent-shaped bone found in the carpals of the hand. I've always been an anatomy and science buff, so the uniqueness of the nice-sounding name stuck with my and with the clan.

Hierarchy of the Lunate Clan (to avoid confusion) wrote:
The clan is made up of (and organized by several 'subgroups' of dragons (in order by page, 1-end. The first 6 pages are permadragons, page 7 if for hatchlings and holds):
  • The Rulers, Matriarch and Patriarch, Ravon and Jura.
  • The Followers, who are fiercely loyal to Ravon and Jura. They consist of the first page and are often coli fighters, soldiers, protectors, and supporters (ending at Apaz).
  • The Granters, who are the dragons that grant the wishes in the MAW Thread. They are the first four on the first row of the second page.
  • The Residents, who listen to the commands of the ranks above them and rather happily go about daily life / jobs (ending at Lyra).
  • The Indifferent, who stay only because of the protection provided by the lair, the relative safety, and the convenience. They socialize and will help hunt, gather, and hoard, but they would only move on to another clan if something were to happen to the Rulers (ending at Riptide).
  • The Alchemists, the dragons driven by discovery and science. Rulers, Loyalists, and other dragons be darned - they even stoop so low to experiment on other dragons. They don't listen to authority in the least (ending with Raaz).
  • The Traitorous, who are bent on overthrowing authority. They often operate under a guise of obedience, but in reality, are constantly scheming (ending at Midas).
  • The Dark. Nobody really knows what to think of these dragons. They radiate an aura of menace, evil, and even Shade. None of these mysterious dragons have done anything detrimental to the clan, but their presence alone is a cause of discomfort.

Introduction to the Lunate Clan
shadowh3.png
WARNING: THIS CLAN IS HOME TO A SHADE-TOUCHED DRAGON, THE GRANDDAUGHTER OF THE GATEKEEPER, NAOMI. PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Lunate's Matriarch: Jura

Lunate's Patriarch: Ravon

The History of The Lunate Clan:

Aimlessly searching for a charge grows exhausting after a few days, Ravon thought, trudging through the shallow waters of the Driftwood Drag. He didn't remember exactly where he hailed from and where he was hatched, nor did he have the faintest inkling what or who he was looking for. He just had an faint wisp of an idea that whatever it was would likely be in the Shadowbinder's domain.
Greyish sediment clung to the scales of Ravon's feet and legs, and his powerful claws crunched over soggy wood and leaves. A faint mist cloaked the area he wandered around the Drag, and that combined with the dim light made it nearly impossible to see anything.
Even in the poor conditions, it would be impossible to miss the large sharp thing that attacked him from behind.
A Shade-touched beast? An angry beastclan boss? he wondered, snarling and panicking. Whatever it was, the creature wasn't letting go.
Ravon struggled, but the sheer weight and strength of the thing brought him down. He felt sharp teeth and powerful jaws struggle for purchase on the back of his neck as hooklike claws held him in place. Closing his eyes, Ravon hoped it would be over quickly--
--Until he felt the claws release. Someone snorted in disgust.
"Eugh, are you kidding me?" whatever it was, it sounded indignant - and...female? A dragon? "Just what do you think you're doing? You made so much noise that I thought you were a giant Pronghorn Stomper, you idiot!" The female dragon let out an audible sigh. "Ah, and it's a pity you're not, really. I was looking forward to a good meal."
Ravon stood shakily and shook the pain from his scales, turning to face his assailant. She was a Guardian dragoness, thin but a bit larger than he, with mulberry scales and black wings. She blended in almost perfectly with her coloration. He, on the other hand, stood out like a Nogglet in a flower bed.
"Anyway," The violet dragoness continued. "Sorry about that. I really did think you were a sizable hunk of prey. Wouldn't have attacked you otherwise. Probably."
Ravon couldn't think of a single thing to say. Instead, stunned and shocked, he voiced his first thought. "Y...you seem hungry. Would you like some help hunting?"
"Help?!" The dragoness flicked her tail angrily and pawed the ground. "Pah! I don't need help. I'm doing just fine hunting."
Right, Ravon thought.
Ravon grimaced. "Are you sure?"
"Well, I suppose if you have any extra claws, I wouldn't mind a little bit of help." The dragoness snorted loudly, obviously annoyed."I'm Jura, by the way. And you are?"
"Ravon."
* * * * * *

Ravon knew after they hunted together that he had finally found his charge. As the two dug into a Wendigo haunch, Jura voiced her insecurities about having not found a charge yet. Ravon mumbled though a mouthful of fur and meat that he didn't mind if Jura had a charge or not. After all: "It took me long enough to find you."
* * * * * *

The two grew close, and Ravon insisted on taking in wandering dragons. Some were criminals, fugitives, or outcasts; others were expelled from their clans, lost, hungry, alone, afraid. One fae was even Shade-Touched. Ravon cared for each and every one of them in the same way.

* * * * * *

As the Lunate Clan expanded, they moved deeper and deeper into the realm of the Shadowbinder. They're now settled in the Forum of the Obscured Crescent, safely nestled among the dense thorns, trees, and rocky outcroppings. Glowing stones, crystals, plants, and bones decorate the walkways frequented by the clan, and each individual or shared burrow, cave, or tree is unique. Clan life is usually peaceful. Well, peaceful-ish.

Seasons wrote:
-Spring starts off slow - melting snow brings achy wings and bones, and food stores are nearly depleted. After the first week or so, though, new growth springs up, and creatures stir. Much excitement is found in lairs, and more food leads to more celebrations and games. The water of the driftwood drag begins flowing again after being frozen-over for months, leading to celebratory swims by the Guardians.
Hunting parties are sent out in spring to replenish food stores, and the nippy chill of night is replaced with roaring campfires and cookouts. Strange or exotic ingredients are often used during these communal dinners, and there is much laughing and sharing of stories, foods, and tricks. Games occur often.

-Summer in Shadow flight bring out abundant flora and fauna - and not always the nice kinds of plants and animals. This is the season when there are the most threats to the lair, and patrols of territory and clans are well-organized. There is always a sentinel or guard on Watch duty, and they switch every few hours. To skip a Watch is a massive taboo in Shadow, and is taken for a sign of weakness by clanmates. Even the sickest or most injured dragons will dutifully take up their post as temporary protector (and are proud to do so).
Food is abundant in summer, and Shadow dragons reap the benefits and rewards of their levels. Battles are frequent, and dragons who don't battle will typically bet on the outcome. The currency they use to bet varies widely - sometimes using treasure, gems, or precious metals, sometimes advice, clothing, or food, and often games or riddles. Everyone is busy in summer, and there's not much time for trickery and fun. It's typically taken up by work.

-Autumn with Shadow flight is a calm and somewhat sated time. Clans make huge communal cauldrons of cocoa and hot cider (which may or may not contain traces of mimic powder or glowshrooms, depending on the playfulness of the dragon in charge of making it that day). A different dragon is in charge of brewing and keeping the fire on the beverages each day, and there are some dragons that are much better at it than others. Non-Shadow dragons often find the apple cider too cinnamon-spicy and the cocoa too thick and rich for their tastes, but Shadow dragons swear that there's nothing better than a lazy autumn afternoon playing chess, betting on the outcomes, and sipping (or chugging) hot beverages.
Dragons usually stock up on commodities such as firewood and food (and tend to be somewhat busily reinforcing lairs) during the autumn, often drying massive slabs of meat, jerky, and herbs for the winter. Fungi and mushrooms are particularly abundant and potent during the autumn, and Shadow dragons often choose this season to harvest and dry them for later use. In emergencies, dried glowshrooms can also be used to light the darkest part of lairs (or be used as nightlights).

-Winter in Shadow is always quite an event. Shadow tundras and spirals especially love the cold, snow, and ice; Shadow guardians, fae, and coatls are typically the most irritated. Guardians especailly dislike the fact that the driftwood drag freezes over, preventing swims and water-related activities.
The cold doesn't bother the tundras at all, the thrive in it, and they often become the substitute lair-maintainers and builders in the winter. The constructs, lodges, and lair-add-ons they make out of snow are haphazard, but they're extremely sturdy and homey. The spirals often help tunnel in the packed snow, popping up when they're least expected and most inconvenient. Shadow dragons, being pranksters and tricksters, often play snow-related pranks and scares. A mage might enchant a snow-harpy to screech at those who walk by, and playful ambushes from imperials flying above with huge snowballs are common and expected. Faes are the only ones exempt from the freezing aerial attacks (as the giant snowballs are far too dangerous for their tiny forms).

Foods wrote:

-Meats are consumed in huge piles in the Lunate Clan. Smaller dragons feast on droves of Duskrats and bats (they're found in abundance almost everywhere in the Shadowbinder's domain). Chickens, ducks, swans, and other fowl and poultry are bred by the clan and kept in a very large dragonmade coop. Reptiles (geckos and anoles) are scarce in the cooler seasons but abundant in warmer ones. Rarely, they can be found scurrying around the leaf litter during autumn. Larger dragons feast on coliseum spoils, such as Wendigo, Stomper, seals, deer, and larger prey - a Duskrat is a mere trifle for an imperial. Meats are often dried, spiced, made into stews, or turned into jerky and stored.

-Seafood must be gathered in the coliseum or the Driftwood Drag. Ridgebacks fish from above while Guardians submerge themselves in the water. Baits are often used by Ridgebacks, but Guardians catch their prey bare-clawed or toothed. Sharks are found in the deepest and siltiest parts of the Drag, but smaller fish stay near the surface. It's difficult to see in the dark water, and often a dragon will run into something completely unexpected. Fish are commonly cooked and spiced, but drying them is more difficult.

-Insect catching is difficult, if not impossible. Prolific fliers snatch huge beetles from branches and flies from the air. Insects are easy to dry and store, but the sheer amount of them needed to sustain a dragon is astronomical. A colony of dermestid beetles is kept in a small stone cave. They're not eaten, they're used to clean and whiten bones.

-Plants are literally...everywhere. It's impossible to not have enough plants. For storage, they're kept in jars of saltwater, dried, or planted. There's an impressive glowshroom colony in the Lunate clan.

-Dragons typically eat together in a group, socializing and sharing. It's considered taboo to miss a meal (unless you're out hunting, fighting in the coliseum, or on Watch.
