Once, long ago, an acorn of The Behemoth fell and rolled far from its mother tree, then was taken by squirrels and hoarded away. It lay forgotten beneath drifts of fallen leaves, and as the earth warmed it became swept along in the snowmelt when winter broke. The acorn finally came to rest in a shallow indentation in the earth, seemingly placed by fate over the capstone to an ancient magical nexus. The acorn cracked like an egg and the sentient seedling inside awoke; but the taproots it put down found their way into cracks in the stone, which it pushed wider- gradually, with the patience of nature itself, it broke through- but instead of earth-bound nutrients, it tapped into pure magical potential. Thus, overnight, as the moon softly shone in the eternal clearing deep in the Viridian, this Tree of Life grew. The Oakheart clan act as its guardians, its keepers, and its family; for this great Oak, a Heart of the Forest, is a sentient creature. I'm Bard. All those of good heart are welcome here. I hope you enjoy your stay." Bard, famous minstrel, wandered for some time with his ragtag followers; snatched from death's cold embrace, or drifting in carried by unlikely winds. The night they settled in the depths of the Viridian Forest, they came upon the Heart's clearing. All felt a sense of ease and peace come upon them, and they happily settled around its vast trunk, grateful for the shelter and the inexplicable sense of safety. Even the scouts slept that night, and in their dreams, they heard it whisper to them. Mephala was the first to awaken, just before dawn. She raised a hand to her face, feeling tears slick on her cheeks- then her eyes fell to the harp at her side. She had no voice, so she used the voice of the strings to sing out in praise and thanksgiving. The others awoke slowly to the sound, humming to themselves before they were even awake- Bard woke up with his hands already stirring on his lute, the notes and words streaming across his mind in a blurring flash, so eager to escape his hands and his lips. The clan sung together, and the birds in the forest joined in, and the tree's leaves whispered and the wind whipped up amongst its branches in sighing chorus- and in that moment of unity and wordless understanding, the Oakheart clan was born. [/columns] The tree loves the clan, as much as the clan loves it; it provides shelter, and sanctuary- for no evil may approach within the grove without having that very evil sapped from their spirit, rendering them harmless to the clansmen. It provides food in the form of varied and unusual flowers, whose nectar gives healing and sustenance, and a variety of medicinal effects, depending on the colour of the bloom. Every evening, Bard plays music and sings to the tree and the clan; accompanied by the dulcet strings of Mephala's harp. The stories and songs around the campfire at night- well out of reach of the branches, but not out of reach of their voices- delight and entrance the youngsters and the tree the same. They tell stories of how the clan became; and stories of how all the clansmen came to be here. Sometimes, the stories are even true. ----- Founders of Oakheart, In Order Of Appearance [columns] Bard [nextcol] Mephala [nextcol] Solus [nextcol] Goldanna [nextcol] Goldentop [/columns] First it was Bard, wandering the land in search of a home, and also searching for himself. He came upon Mephala, beset by wolves, and helped fight them off by using his lute as a blunt instrument, and the two walked together, in companionable silence or cheery music as they walked, developing the kind of bond that goes beyond words. Solus and Goldanna were looking for a safe place and happened upon the fireside in the Viridian where the two musicians played, and not long after, Goldentop turned up out of the blue- teleported into the camp, took one look, said 'Nah, this ain't the Wastes-" and disappeared. After about ten minutes of the dragons remarking on the strangeness of this brief visitation, hypothesizing about the nature of the mysterious stranger, another pop like a champagne cork and a panting gold fae reappeared, clutching a sack bigger than itself that made a clinking crash like gold on gold when she dropped it and flung herself down by the fireside without further explanation. She grinned up at them, lying on her back by the glowing embers, unabashed and cheerful. "Wotcha! You chaps seem decent, 'ow's about I crash with youse fer a bit?" She hugged the treasure tightly to her chest; "Least till they forget my description. Wildclaws, man," She rolled her eyes theatrically; "Tiny arms, but damn if they can't run." There was clearly more to the story, which Bard has never finished getting out of Goldentop, because the fae's tale of triumphs and near-misses and hilarious mishaps, thefts and capers seems endless. It sure makes for good story material though, and even though they parted ways and travelled on, the tiny mischievous fae conveniently just kept turning up wherever the band went, often with something over her arm, never 'technic'ly' belonging to her, but somehow this was family. Clan Locations

The Caves- Mars and Winterdawn's Bioluminescent Caverns, Peleides' Laboratory,

The Living Library

The Forge

The Heart Oak Meadow (and meeting place): central

Clock Gardens
-careful planting of day and night-flowering plants, to be a living clock, in the middle of the Living Library.

The Academy
Haunt of academics, such as Phycodurous and his strange contraptions for tracking the movement of planets; Melinoe and her star charts and predictive astronomy and her extensive arguments with the former; Bering, when she is on dry land and trying to hide from her accidental conjuring dragons; and occasionally Peleides, before he gets shooed out for setting fires near expensive equipment again,and banished to his 'laboratory cave';

Wispwillow swamps- inhabited by Iocosus the trickster, Ambrosia and Luciela, and Mithra.
Always hope you don't run into Mithra.

Nesting Grounds

Hatchling Commons

Dockside Markets- overseen by Albus, staffed variously by the merchant dragons.
Nadine sells her artistic garments and artworks crafted from ocean treasures;

The Hoard: Guarded ferociously by Frostbite, inhabited by Goldentop (in theory, though some still persist in believing she never sleeps)

Siren's Call Inn: Run by the quirky gender-nonspecific Fae, Mermaid; barmaid Amphitrite keeps everyone served with ornate cocktails of her own concoction and also her alphabetical knowledge of all known drinks; Aladdin lazes about during the day then sharks the gaming tables at night;

The Pirate Ship: The Grand Larceny
Headed by Captain Mal and his first mate, (Pirate Queen) Goldentop, sometimes including Albus the Merchant's Guildleader, Bering the Weather Mage and Navigator, and last but not least, FlyingDutchman 'Duck' the Quartermaster.

One day your clan finds a mysterious package at the entrance. What do they do? Who panics? Who opens it curiously? Who wants to destroy it? What's in the package? Where did it come from and for what reason?

Sunsoot would demand it be destroyed, as would Cloudweaver- Gragonith would point out there could be something inside it, something precious, and the others would hesitate. Aqua would panic, decide it was a magical bomb and fling himself bodily over the package, begging the others to get down and to remember him- theatrically throwing himself in harm's way, as it were. Tigress would haul him off by the scruff of his neck, cuff him around the head for taking unnecessary risks and tell him to stand still and be quiet. Then she would glare at anyone who dared snigger.
Goldentop wouldn't be the one opening it curiously. She would be the one who would have to physically be restrained constantly, with iron and magic and bodily handfuls of her wings, in order to stop her from opening it out of her curiosity which is more insatiable than that of Pandora with regard to her box.

Cookie or Jimbu, who likely would have delivered it, would feel utterly responsible for whatever it might contain, and would stand around hopping from foot to foot in anxiety until the contents was ascertained.

Celandine however would brave proximity with the box while the others were bickering, and dare to lift the lid- inside would be a tiny hatchling, sleeping peacefully, and with it would be a note- "Please find someone who might want him, for he deserves life.'
It would have come from one of the allied clans, or clans with which Oakheart has been friendly, clans which value the downtrodden and the lost- clans which knew of Oakheart's penchant for waifs and strays, and love for those considered unloveable. Perhaps even a mother, sent with her unwanted hatchlings to the Auction House before their time, might have slipped out before joining the ranks headed to serve a deity and might have sent the box with little more than a prayer to whatever god might be listening, that at least one of her children might be saved.

Otherwise, if it were a totally different box, it would be a box containing a metric tonne of magical sticky airborne glitter and an explosion of Goldentop as she leaps out from it shouting 'Surprise!!" and showers the area with glitter, as she returns from the Light-aligned sister clan of Sun Soul. Then the clan would spend the next few weeks brushing glitter out of their hair, their clothes, their food, the tree's leaves, all the while Goldentop would cackle over her own cleverness, and the others would grumble that they really *should* have stomped on the box while they'd had the chance, and rid themselves of two poxes at once!

Fashion in the clan:
How are your dragons relating to fashion? Do you have designers or someone who helps dressing others? How are clothes viewed in your clan?

Fashion is more or less an optional extra. Because the origins of the clans folk of Oakheart are so diverse, so are their ideas about clothing and fashion- many don't see the need for it, some think it absolutely compulsory and look at the underdressed 'primitives' askance (specifically, Madeleine, who thinks every dragon ought to be dressed and splendidly so).
Mostly clothing is used for function, as a banner of pride, a memento of former lives or as self-expression. Lately, because of the arrival of Tourmaline the elderly gentle-dragon and seamstress, keen to 'do her bit' and assist the clan with her gifts, clothing has been cropping up more frequently amongst the inhabitants; Cloudweaver's splendid new banner and cloth armour weave, honouring his family with its colours, are thanks to her talents- and he wears them with dignity and pride.

Other than the extremely opinionated, self-proclaimed designer and fashionista Madeleine, who critiques what dragons should wear with an extremely loud voice until they usually submit to her fashion advice just for the sake of peace and quiet- there are also some other artisan crafters who work to clothe dragons.
Shyllantham for example, is a multi-talented artisan who can turn her hand to almost anything creative, and can be milliner, weaver, spinner, tailor or leatherworker, just depending on the need of the day. Shylla takes after her grandfather Damask, the Master of Threads, renowned tailor and leatherworker of his clan- and her fine needlework is a source of great family pride. Her stitches are as good as a Fae's, and far more neat and predictable, because she is not hampered by the attention span of a Fae..
The fae females of the clan do however like to spend every evening chatting together in the firelight, pleasantly engaged with weaving and spinning the fine gossamer threads of silk from their trained spiders and their imported rare silkworms. Which they only eat accidentally, when they forget themselves. They leave it up to 'artists' to decide what to do with the raw materials, once they've finished making them.

Wispwillow swamps- inhabited by Iocosus the trickster, Ambrosia and Luciela, and Mithra.
Always hope you don't run into Mithra.

Location: Siren's Call Inn, run by Mermaid.

A series of coarse-woven tents, made from salvaged or 'liberated' ship sails, stitched into vast circus-like yurts and one particularly large 'big top' style fabrication which is only raised for festival gatherings or unusual celebrations near the beach. It takes three imperials to hold the roof in place while it is secured by a multitude of ropes, and all Jimbu the handy dragon's skills with engineering to precision-place the pins in the surrounding earth so that the slightest breeze won't blow the whole thing away. Often, it has been necessary to nearly bury the yurt walls with shored-up sand, to hold them in place against unseasonal changeability.
It is quite the sight to behold, once illuminated against the night sky on warm summer evenings; the mismatched, hodgepodge tent city on the beachside fairly glows under the stars.
When not in festival season, Mermaid's chief role is inn keep and bartender to the travellers and merchants passing through Oakheart's territory. Mermaid keeps a thriving tavern, allowing creative dragons free room and board in exchange for lively acts and stories.

Mermaid was named after the mythical sea creatures who led sailors astray with their beauty and their song, luring the ships into reefs, to pillage the livelihoods of the sailors and often their lives. Their undersea treasure troves, guarded by leviathans of the deeps, sounded- to the hatchling Beach subspecies fae- like precisely the home they dreamed of building for themselves.
Mermaid didn't start out as a part of the Oakheart clan, moreover they started out as a wanderer, like so many others; combing the beaches far from home, letting their feet carry them over the distant dunes and glittering rock pools, eyes cast downward and ever onward. When finally their burden of gleaned treasures was too heavy, they sat down and watched the sunset, deciding that here in the sheltered bay where a river fed into the ocean, was just as good a place as any to live.

Mermaid is a merchant at heart, but without much sense; anything shiny appeals, be it sand-soft glass or mother-of-pearl oyster shells. Their decoration skills tend toward the nautical at best, eclectic and mildly abrasive junk heaps of shells at their worst, but everyone who stays in the Siren's Call Inn will recommend their host for their ability to run a tight ship, a happy ship, and one in which everyone leaves with their pockets as well as their hearts, significantly lighter

The Oakheart clan is a hub of healing, sanctuary, and respite, so it has more than its fair share of healers.

The musicians double as healers 'of the soul'; the singers; Bard, Celandine (who I've just decided is going to be the lead soprano), Anathea, and others can melt hearts, like Enchantress and Galadriel's lullabies, and even silent Mephala's harp can soothe troubled thoughts, ease away nightmares.

Bard
is a healer with words; his stories transform trauma into tales which can be processed better by the people who've lived through it, rather like a real-world counsellor does in a process called 'storying'.

Vortex
is the clan's main scientific doctor and surgeon. He and his mate
Medini
came to the Oakheart clan from the clan of Katalist, also known as The Tribe of Mordremoth and Pyre. **READ THEIR STORIES** Seriously. Read them all. They are spectacular and perfect and inspiring <3 Medini, as well as the heart-healer and nightmare-purger
Galadriel
, are adept nurses and follow Vortex's instructions conscientiously whenever needed.

Carbonel
is a practical healer, and specializes in the cultivating, sourcing and preparing of exotic herbal medicine plants, largely- he is trained in medicinal techniques at his father's side, but he has learned not to incorporate his nature-based magic unless absolutely necessary- his life mate
Gabrielle
is now more or less part dryad, as a consequence of his life-saving magic, which is fine, and she doesn't mind being green with daisies growing all over her; but sometimes she misses being able to actually brush her hair. And it's just lucky she doesn't get hayfever.

Given the Nature setting, it is unsurprising that many clansfolk are herbalists;
Luciela
is a botanist, a specialist in plant properties, and a kind of swamp witch without the cackling. She holds no truck with things like 'eye of newt', but will happily sell such nonsense to any wanting to buy it. She always needs more gold to buy yet more expensive hand-illustrated botanical guides to medicinal uses of plants she'll never be able to grow. Though she tries.

is Luciela's daughter, though the pair are the only two in the clan who seem unaware of the fact; she is a cultivator and collector of poisonous plants, frogs, spiders and mushrooms. No one wants, or asks her to do this, but since there's no stopping her, it may as well be official. Hatchlings have learned quickly that if Ambrosia is touching it, it's poisonous. If Ambrosia is eating it, it's probably completely deadly. If you can't be a good example, be a terrible warning. Just make sure people know which one you're trying to be.

There is also the quiet achiever
Minaret,
the hedge-wizard and herbal healer, who applies poultices and changes bandages and does all the menial tasks too mind-numbing for the quick and intelligent Vortex. If a dragon has just a sniffle or a tummy ache, they'll knock on Minaret's door rather than brave any of the more intimidating specialists, and he'll greet them in his quiet and timid way, and help them to the best of his ability. He never grumbles even though he is awoken by knocking any time of day or night, for the most ridiculous of tiny ailments; he is the very soul of patience and forbearance.

Lore a day: Promises
September 2016. Are there dragons in your lair who never keep their promises? Why is that? Are they silly or do they lie? Are they forgetful or do they do it on purpose?

Promises are of the utmost importance in the Oakheart Clan. Agreements are nothing by comparison, not worth even the paper they are written on- promises, in front of witnesses, must be enforced by law, and certainly in terms of honour. It is the utmost offence for a dragon to renege on a promise.
Sometimes a dragon is forgetful, air-headed, absent-minded or wilfully apathetic, however. Like Aladdin and his selective memory loss, Goldentop and her kleptomania and compulsive lying,

But not many Oakheart dragons make promises they have no intention of keeping. And it is not that often that a dragon will push for confirmation on a promise for another dragon to do something, unless it is really very important- or it is seen as a slight against the dragon's credibility and reliability.

Reasons for lying, vary. Iocosus is a trickster, a charlatan, and lies impulsively for effect or to evade. Leto lies because she knows that sometimes the truth needs to be drip-fed, or people can become overwhelmed and shut down. The reformed criminals, Raol the pirate-captain and Portobello the highwayman, lie out of practise and instinct, and have to work against that part of their natures to be able to trust, and earn it, of the Oakheart clans folk.
