I mainly use Krita 3.0 and Gimp 2.8, but there's also Gimp 2.9, a development version with more features. You have to compile that first though.

Gimp:
  • over 60 pre-installed brushes
  • 10 brush engines, including eraser
  • seperate brush dynamics
  • 21 blending modes
  • Calligraphy Tool
  • Path Tool
  • Transform Tools, including Perspective and Cage
  • Grid, Horizontal and Vertical Guides
  • Layers with Alpha Lock and Transparency Masks

  • Color Modes: RGB, Grayscale and Indexed Color Mode

I have no specific number, but Gimp has slightly more filters available than Krita.

And I like to add some worthy features of MediBang Paint Pro, even though I don't know the program too well.
  • 7 brush engines, including eraser
  • 10 blending modes
  • Grid, rulers and perspective assistent
  • Layers with Alpha Lock, Grayscale Layers and Black/White Layers.

@superninjadragon FireAlpaca is amazing. I've heard it's. A lot like Paint Tool Sai, but since I've never owned a windows, I can't compare it. It works really well for me, though, even without a stylus! It's completely free, too.

@FuzzyBelly
Actually, Paint Tool Sai is not exactly like FireAlpaca. Sure, both are minimalistic. As far as I recall Sai has more impressive and unique brushes, but less blending modes, escpecially on the brushes.

FireAlpaca and MediBang Paint Pro are EXACTLY the same, except the theme color and the cloud options.

@SuperNinjaDragon I use something called Art Rage 3.0 mostly, occasionally GIMP but that's only for accents.

Art Rage is pretty minimalist and you have to pay for it (I got it free with my tablet). I believe you can import your own brushes and stickers, it has layers and several art mediums to chose from. Sadly 3.0 doesn't have any gradient tools, but 4 does!

@SuperNinjaDragon thank you for this awesome thread, it's really very helpful. I have used Artweaver also, they offer a trial version (no usage time limit, but no saves).

Ping myself to bookmark this thread: @Akaineko

RECCOMENDED:

If you can't afford an expensive program, but would like to create beautiful artworks:
  • Medibang I may be biased since I use this, but it's just as good as any of the paid programs! FireAlpaca is a good alternative if you like its layout better.
  • Gimp
  • Krita
  • FireAlpaca

Creating digital artworks:
  • Paint Tool Sai
  • Artweaver

Creating traditional-style artworks:
  • ArtRage

Photo editing and photo manipulation is your passion!:
(also great for editing artworks!)
  • Photoshop An industry standard, albeit rather costly!

If you use an iPad to draw:
  • Procreate Works well with Apple Pencils and Ipads!

NOTE!:
This section is pretty subjective, and consists of my own recommendations. For example, you can use Photoshop to draw artworks, not just for photo editing and manipulation, but it is simply my recommendation to use it for photo editing/manipulation - due to its original purpose being so (hence the name PHOTOshop) and because of its high cost and specialisation for photo editing.
