She was made to guard it as a statue, prepared to animate to life should some grave robber come along to steal her charge. Her stone eyes watched over it, and she was shaped to curl around it like a mother would her egg. Terell was certainly surprised when he broke into the tomb to steal the artifact only to find an angry coatl with fire in her veins and anger in her eyes. She tried to warn him, to fight him off, but in the end, he made off with the artifact. Being cursed to remain within a certain distance of the artifact, Chopin had no choice but to follow him all the way back to his clan. She badgered him to bring it back, doing everything she could to pester him, but unfortunately, nothing she did worked. It was to her great delight, however, that she was able to stop him from selling it. Once any potential buyer realized it came with a dragon attached, they lost interest immediately. She also had a habit of stealing other artifacts from him to try and get him to barter it back. As time went on, her pranks and pestering grew less and less extreme. As she spent more time with blood flowing through her veins, the more she realized how much she liked being alive. Sure, she was confined within a certain area, but that area was big enough to allow her to join in on the life of the clan she now resided in. She may be a prisoner, but she could still make friends. She could still make herself at home. She began to resent Terell less and less for taking her artifact. After all, he was good at protecting his artifacts. If no one was going to buy it, what difference did it make where it was protected? Why did she have to go back and become a statue again? As more time went on, she found herself remembering more and more of her life before she was tasked with guarding the stone. She had been cursed to be trapped within the stone as a punishment for stealing the artifact in the first place. It was commonplace back in the day, when burying one's hoard with one's self when they died, to lay traps for potential grave robbers. They would lay decoys with the spell on them, so that the first dragon to pick it up would be tasked with protecting the rest of the hoard. Rich dragons could set it up so hundreds of stone dragons could protect their treasures after their deaths. Chopin had fallen victim to the trap when trying to steal something in order to pay the ransom on her niece when she was stolen away by a band of thieves wandering dragonhome. Upon making this realization, she began to grow thankful that Terell had stolen the artifact, freeing her from the curse. Not that she'd ever tell him, of course. He had not, after all, stolen from intention to free her but instead stole from greed. As Chopin became more immersed in clan life, she became close friends with Gwenna, who also was close to another dragon in the Black Market. She began joining Gwenna on her quests to protect the prey Gavis was hunting from him. It soon became a game for them. They would go out when Gavis or Terell did, and they would see if they could stop them from completing the deeds they set out to do, without them knowing that they were out there stopping them. On these occasions, Chopin would steal the artifact briefly from Terell so that she could leave the clan. Chopin has also started a relationship with Dremasul, another member of the Black Market. he has not told her much about his past, or what he does for a living, but he absolutely dotes on Chopin, and Chopin has fallen in love with the mysterious wildclaw. She knows what a trapped dragon looks like, and she can tell Dremasul is trapped in something. She wants to help free him, or at the very least, they can be trapped dragons together. Ancient Protector
Song: Break - Rebecca Roubion

'Cause I won’t break for nothing
Though my mistakes cost me something
It’s all that I can do, and it’s more than I can take,
But I won’t break

Chopin has guarded her artifact for years.

That's how I've gotten myself into this mess. I know I should confess to the whole thing. I wish I could sit down and have a good heart to heart chat with her, but that in and of itself is impossible, and not just because she's barely speaking to me. It was part of my contract, not to tell anyone of my task until the deed was done. The task was simple. I was not the only dragon given a second chance at life, there was another. All I had to do was find him and kill him. I know, it sounds like some twisted game, but it's not like it was properly murder or anything. He was already dead, and until the task was complete, we'd be living on some strange state of half life anyways. At least, that's what I told myself then. Now it seems entirely different. Once I signed my name on the dotted line, I became a hatchling again with one distinct difference. I still had my mind. I was weaker than I had been in a lifetime, but my mind was strong and the task set before me burned in my skull. The moment I was strong enough to travel, i left the arcane clan I had been born in to begin my search. I grew up in the wilderness of Sornieth, traveling from flight to flight in hopes of meeting my foe. I had no idea what he'd look like, or who he'd be. All I knew was that once I found him, I would know. I never expected to make any friends until I earned my life back, much less fall in love. My task before me became an obsession, yet there was one who broke it. Her name is Draxxor. I met her while travelling. She was different from the other dragons I had met. Most stayed out of my way as best they could, but she looked at me with curiosity, like I was something she had never seen before. She followed me around for a little while. I knew she was there, but I was curious to see what she would do, so I pretended I didn't see her. Eventually, i had the guts to actually speak to her. We hit it off instantly, and we traveled together for a while. Then, she invited me to come home with her. I almost turned her down, but it had been so long since I had been in the company of dragons. If only I had known then that she was the key, maybe I wouldn't have gotten so attached. Her brother was the one. He was my opposite, the one I had been questing for. The moment I met him, I felt a jolt through my entire being, followed by a deep feeling of dread. The way he looked at me, it was as if he wanted to rip me apart right then and there. He probably would have, had it not been for Draxxor. Dakota and I have never gotten along. Thankfully, Draxxor has just written it off to him being overprotective over her, as she is her charge, but she has no idea it runs so much deeper than that. Having Draxxor certainly complicated things. By that time, though we were not mates, we had still become friends, and I think Dakota was reluctant to hurt her in that way. I know I was. How could I ever take her brother, her closest friend, away from her? We settled into an uneasy truce, but I know neither of us have stopped planning. We both knew we couldn't live in a half life forever. When Draxxor and I moved to Trap Street, Dakota followed. When Draxxor and I got married, he gave a shallow acceptance, but I knew he didn't trust me. He probably thought I only wanted to be close to her to get close to him. He probably still does. The eggs were unexpected, though they are what tore everything apart. No, sorry, that was mean. I could never think that way of Epidemic. It was entirely on me. I wasn't fully dragon anymore. I wasn't supposed to have children, at least not until my life was restored. But things happened quickly, and the next thing we knew, we were eagerly awaiting the arrival of our children. The thing is, my condition deeply hurt them. When they hatched, they were extremely ill with an illness no one recognized. I think it was because they were only three quarters alive. Dragons are never meant to exist like that. Draxxor was heartbroken. We thought we were going to loose them all. It looked like none of them would make it through that first night, and it broke my heart. We had to act fast. I had heard of a doctor, in shadow, who was experienced in this sort of thing. He may not have ever seen anything like our specific case before, but he was out only hope. We hired an escort, and left that day. Our sons died on the journey. They never made it to the doctor. But our daughter, my beautiful Epidemic, she hung in there. She survived. Unfortunately, Draxxor and I couldn't stay there the whole time. We traveled back and forth to visit, but we could not entirely be there for our daughter. That was when we fell apart. Draxxor was furious that I had not told her about the illness I carried in my genes. I wanted to explain everything then and there, but the spell binding the contract held my tongue. After that, we weren't together anymore. She can't read me like she can read other dragons, but I think she could tell I was hiding something. Once I wasn't with Draxxor anymore, I was open season for Dakota. I tried to stay out of his way, I really did, but fate has a way of working itself out. He attacked me first. I didn't want to kill him, but when it suddenly became about life and death, I had no choice but to fight my hardest against him. With his size, I'm surprised that I won, especially when he took me by surprise, but then again, I have been training for this for a very long time. Of course, with her brother dead, Draxxor hated me even more. Not that I blame her. I hate me too. I hate what I've become. I am a murderer now, not just of Dakota, but of many more dragons. Innocent dragons with families and lives. Actual real lives, not just half lives. You see, it was a trick, a test. The whole "other half of my life" thing? The dragon that gave me life, Idwallon, he lied. Dakota was a full-blooded dragon, one that he wanted the soul of. He holds the other half of my life in a lanturn, out of reach. To earn it back, I have to kill every single dragon on that stinking list he has and deliver their souls to him. If I don't comply, he'll get someone to kill those that I love, and trap their souls too. I can't let him do that to Draxxor. or Epidemic. Or... Chopin. It was Mercer who gave me an outlet. He hired me to be the Black Market's assassin. I went along with it, figured it was the best way to get out and kill those on the list, but now it feels like I'm a slave to two dragons, not just one. I've hurt so many dragons. I've had so many close calls. I can't go to sleep without hearing their screams and seeing their blood on my talons. Not that I can complain. I deserve this, I know I do. I am a thief of life, and for that I shall never get peace. I must suffer for my crimes, to keep my family safe. My family is bigger now. Oh, Draxxor still won't have anything to do with me, but in the Black Market, I met Chopin. She too is beyond her years, like me, from another time. She too is trapped, though not as brutally as I am. I don't deserve her. I should probably stay away from her, to keep her safe, but I'm selfish. Now I live in fear of her getting hurt as I hurt Draxxor. I am being pulled in so many directions. It's hard to know which way I will turn when I am forced to choose. I hope I never have to choose, but I don't know how I can keep going like this. Fault lines tremble underneath my glass house,
But I put it out of my mind, long enough to call it courage
To live without a lifeline.
I bend the definition of faith to exonerate my blind eye
'Til the sirens sound I'm safe.

If you were offered a second chance at life, would you take it? That's the offer I was given.

Knowing, however, that with her sister next in line for the throne, she'd never be queen (especially as getting her hands dirty is so not her style), she left her birth clan at a young age. She soon found her way to Iyonda Landing, a growing port town that was missing something vitally important. Banella was the one to fund the opening of the opera house. If she could never be queen, then being a reclusive and mysterious rich opera house owner was the next best thing. She barely makes public appearances, and when she does, she is sure to act mysterious. She does not actually have a lot of money, and she actually lives a pretty boring and lonely life, but she has a flair for the dramatic and if she isn't actually going to be important, she might as well make dragons believe she is. With her flair for the dramatic, people often expect that she would play a major role in most of the performances the Opera House puts on, but the truth is, she only appears for a few each year. This is because she is more of a playwright than a performer, and she writes her plays under a pseudonym, pretending it was written by some far off dragon who she constantly talks about trying to get to visit. She is currently trying to work out how she would get her to visit without revealing it to be herself, but she is determined to pull it off somehow. Even though Iyonda Landing has it's own theatre company, Banella rarely lets them perform in her performances. Instead, the Performing Arts group performs on a smaller, cheaper stage and Banella brings in big name actors from all over Sornieth to perform in her plays. Part of the reason she is poor is because most of the money she makes off of ticket sales go towards paying these actors and actresses for their work instead of to making sure Banella has enough to survive. Banella depends a lot on her loyal director, Baine, to ensure she can pull off everything she's trying to do. The one part of her life that is genuinely shrouded in mystery, however, is her love life. She is officially in a relationship with the director of the Opera House, Baine, but she is also having an affair with a wildclaw named Leo back in her birth clan. Not many dragons know of her affair, but those who do are unsure if Baine is aware that he isn't the only man in her life. Banella

dragon?did=33201295&skin=22939&apparel=22819&xt=dressing.png

Lady

Banella was born of royal blood.

The dragons back in her birth clan are also unsure if Leo knows that he isn't the only one Banella is in a relationship. Whenever Banella's sister asks her about it, she waves it off and refuses to comment.

The Princess

The night before Jolene hatched, an old seer visited her parents. The couple were ecstatic about the hatching of their first nest. It would be the first royal nest of the new kingdom, and though neither would be heir (as that was a system long since dismantled), everyone was excited. This nest was a symbol of hope and strength and the new beginnings within the port town of Iyonda Landing.

The news the seer carried, however, was very grave. With great sadness, she told the queen and her husband that one of the two hatchlings would cause the destruction of the clan. Surely, if they raised their kids to be loyal and true, neither would cause destruction to the clan, after all.

When it became clear that Jolene's brother was headstrong and reckless, they sent him away from the clan to join one that wished to make an alliance with the port town. Jolene was a quiet hatchling, one who kept very much to herself. She was always considered a very sweet kid, and no one ever suspected that she was the one the prophecy spoke of, not even herself.

Her parents hired a young wildclaw by the name of Juneo to act as a guard to Jolene. They told her it was for her own protection, but Jolene knew the truth. She had overheard her parents talking, and she had worked out the possibility of her being at fault for the destruction of the clan. She tries to avoid her parents, and everyone else in power. No one knows that she knows about the prophecy, and she is trying her hardest not to let it come to fulfillment.

Little does she know that the clock is ticking. The end of Iyonda Landing will come whether she seeks it or not. She may be happy on her small delivery ship, but she cannot run forever. Destiny awaits.

He is one of the very few dragons who has been told about the prophecy that states a child of the queen will destroy the clan, and he has been sworn to secrecy. Growing up, he was fascinated by the princess. He was always told she was the most likely to cause the clan's downfall, but he didn't understand why. She seemed like an ordinary, kind dragon. He longed to get to know her better, maybe even become her friend, but he had a job, one that didn't allow for friendship with the princess. Their relationship must be strictly professional. He joined Jolene when she took up the job as captain of a delivery ship, despite her protests. She always stated that it was silly that she had a guard, and since Iyonda Landing didn't have an heir system, she wasn't of any particular importance to the clan. Little did he know, each time she complained, she was testing him. She had found out about the prophecy and was tired of being lied to. She wanted to truth. Eventually, late one night once the rest of the crew had gone to bed, Jolene confessed that she knew about the prophecy, and explained that this was why she had taken the job. She loved her clan, and hated to think that she might be the one to destroy it. She wanted to save it. If she weren't so cowardly, she claimed, she'd run away from the clan and never return. She couldn't do that though, after all, what if the clan needed her to save them from something and that's why she was destined to destroy the clan? It was clear this prophecy was causing Jolene great anxiety, so Juneo broke one of his vows. He told the princess what he knew, and took the first step towards friendship with her. They grew closer, keeping their relationship a secret from the clan. Only the ship's crew knew, and their loyalty was to the princess, not the town and its queen. Juneo knows there is no escaping fate. He knows he has chosen the side of the clan's destroyer, but just because he knows his wife's fate doesn't mean he has accepted it. His duty is still to protect the princess from herself, but he will now achieve this not by taking her down if necessary, but by fighting against whatever Jolene does to spark the destruction of the clan. One of the first stops was an Arcane clan with a Wildclaw leader like her mom! During this stop, 3 dragons like her were born. She grew close to them, playing with them when they felt up to it and the mother would allow it. She found it fascinating that she use to be like them. She tried to be careful with them. Before her mom said it was time to go, though she wouldn't say why, she got to go on a gathering session with the mother and father of the hatchlings plus a gray tundra. She had a lot of fun crawling into places they couldn't get to to find something exciting! *** He called himself Tempakeet, and he was terrifying. What had first been a shadow in the sky, soon turned into the shape of a pitch black imperial: Before she knew it, he'd caught her in his claws and flown off with her. She was to become his bride, he had chosen her. Once they reached his lair, which was atop a tall pillar in the depth of the Tangled Woods, he placed a curse on her so that she could no longer fly, threatening her that if she ever attempted to escape, he'd do even worse than that. Heartbroken, Ziora had to cope with the meager existence there: Other female dragons had been hoarded up in a similar way, robbed away from their clans, one of them was Ellasear, who was the only one to dare approach her once Tempakeet had left. She healed her bruises, and spoke to her in a hushed voice. "Some of the dragons here won't think twice about telling on you, so what I am about to share with you, you mustn't pass on. "You are a newcomer, so I trust you. I have a plan to get out of here - this place is high up, jumping would be fatal, but there is another way. The slope is steep, but for a slender skydancer like myself, and an agile pearlcatcher like you, a descent is possible. However," she licked her beak in contemplation, "You'll have to leave behind the pearl - Yes, I know," she noticed Ziora's widened eyes, "it's the essence of what you are, but you see... this dragon must be destroyed. I do not intend to leave all these dragons behind to please his personal whim - when I am out of here, I'll organize a raid against him. I come from a powerful clan with many high ranking warriors, he won't be any match for us. You'll be able to retrieve your pearl then - I can't have you wait here. We need to be two for the climb, it's not possible to make it alone." Ziora considered the options, and then agreed to proceed. She hid her pearl in a place she thought no one would look, and then they started their descent. The climb was dangerous, the rocks wet from an storm that had passed through just days ago. On instinct, the two dragons kept close: Ellasear slipped once, and it would have gone very badly, had Ziora not been able to catch her by the tail. It took almost an entire day to reach the bottom, and when they did, they cowered in the bushes and watched the sky for Tempakeet's shadow. Eventually, they crossed into the more peaceful lands of the Lightweaver. "You are welcome to accompany the army in its attack," Ellasear told her that same evening, when they had found their way to the clan and the debrief had finally been accomplished. "I'd rather not," Ziora answered in honesty. "Then I'll make sure your pearl is found and brought to you." They nodded in agreement, and the attack was launched. From what Ziora was told after the fact, things had gone wrong very early. Tempakeet's personal collection of wives were not all there against their wishes: Those who had proven themselves loyal to him had been granted training and flying. Ellasear's warriors found themselves hit pretty hard by skilled warriors, and the females who weren't on Tempakeet's side were too crippled by their flightlessness to fight back. The intense use of magic did something to the magnetic field of Sornieth, as though so much magica wasn't supposed to be channeled in one place at such a rapid speed. The pillar, torn by the vicious dragons and spells, cracked from the effort - and that was when Tempakeet arrived, just in time to see it go down, he watched from afar. Some warriors launched at him, but it was too late - he left without a fight. The pillar, the flightless females and Ziora's pearl were all lost to the fall. Once Ellasear had finished telling her of what had happened, she thought she'd never feel happy again. Her pearl was lost - either cracked or buried deep under rubble and the dead, and as if that wasn't enough, she was still flightless. She had a decision to make - either, she'd go to Shadow Flight and look for her pearl, or she'd try to regain her ability to fly, first. *** She decided to first seek her flight. After all, what would happen if she found her pearl, but was unable to reach it due to her flightlessness. She wasn't sure where to go to find it again, but she felt that the best place to start looking was wind. After all, that flight was known to have the most skilled fliers, and many wind dragons spent more time in the air than out of it. What she hadn't expected was to happen upon her mother's birth clan. Iyonda Landing had changed from the inn her mother had hatched in to a large and bustling port town. She had never met her mother's family, and was shocked to find the welcome she received once she had announced herself to be Louisa's daughter. Preparations were made to throw a party to celebrate her visit, and many dragons flooded her with questions about the well-being of her mother and about her own adventures. All the planning was cut short, however, when she was unable to follow them up to the higher airborne platforms of the town. The ferry service for flightless dragons carried her up too one of the lower platforms, and all preparations for the party were halted when they realized how overwhelmed and tired she was. It was then that Hew stepped forward, and suggested that she receive some medical attention. She was then brought to Baron and Belarus's business where they tried a few simple herbal remedies over the course of the next week. Nothing worked, the magic was far too deep. It was then that Hew and Res took on the care for the pearlcatcher. Months passed, and though Ziora grew comfortable in the clan of her grandparents, she longed to join her family in the skies. Res and Hew tried every remedy possible, but nothing seemed to work. She was flightless still, and she seemed to be doomed to remain that way. Her spirits fell. As she spiraled deeper and deeper into her depression, she was unaware that Hew was beginning to find a alternative method of flight. After weeks of talking to important dragons in the clan, he approached Ziora with his idea. Being a port town, the clan had an abundance of sky ships. If Ziora could only learn to sail one, she could gain flight without use of her wings. The thought of being able to feel the wind in her scales again lead her to become hopeful again, and she let Hew And Res bring her out of the treatment center. There she was presented with a sky ship of her own, big enough to carry only four dragons tops without getting too cramped. Flying lessons began the very next day. It did not take long for her to master the ship, and to her joy, she was flying again. All that was left to try her skills in the skies of other flights, and all would be well again. With practice, she too passed that test with flying colours. Soon, she knew it was time to find her pearl again. She was sad to leave the dragons she had grown close to, and they were sad to see her go, but she wasn't complete without her pearl. Setting off into the skies once more, she knew she would never forget what Iyonda Landing had done for her. Uh-oh, looks like this restless lass wandered a little too far from his/her home lair (256252, Petall), and now she's off to see the world! If ever you feel the need to exalt, she'd really appreciate it if you could just return her to the home lair, or to the 'Dragons Off To See The World' thread, here. This is not necessary, but she would be very grateful!

Ziora was excited to follow her mom on adventures.

***

He called himself Tempakeet, and he was terrifying.

We need to be two for the climb, it's not possible to make it alone."

Ziora considered the options, and then agreed to proceed.

***

She decided to first seek her flight.
