The name resonates within you; it strikes faint memories, that fabled place. Dragons in the area speak of it in hushed tones, because it's rumored that what goes, no matter how healthy or broken they may be, in never comes out the same, if at all. The place in mention is a murky, ancient village occupied by magic that twists dragons rejected by their world. Around the riverbend there appears to be naught but swamp, but one that looks hard enough may begin to see, with dawning morbid curiosity, the shapes that flit in and around the area. If you feel watched, you probably aren't hidden from the peeping eyes of the trees around you. Whatever this place is, it sure isn't natural. They are considered elemental blessings (save for bogsneaks; they’re seen as either beasts and shunned or praised as products of immeasurable intellect) and have intense elemental magical gifts. Generally, Gen Ones take upon important roles as they naturally seek excellence; this, too, is considered a sign of favor from the deities. Unfortunately, this leads to a bit of a class divide or social triangle between Gen Ones and Non-Gen Ones; the issue has lessened in severity as time has gone on and these dragons have spread out. In the beginning, there were naught but Gen Ones, the looks and likes of which varied greatly. Many of similar backgrounds and elemental affinity banded together, but their commonalities became exemplified, the norm a stereotype, and differences points of conflict. Each community realized this at different states of development, some too late… Those that did realize it soon enough, however, prospered. As their communities became saturated with Non-Gen Ones, their offspring and the offspring of others, a functional society took shape, and those who had started the clans were called “Progenitors.” Geography ----- The Tangled Wood takes after the swampy marshes and dense, low-elevation forests of Louisiana. The region, as every other is, is teeming with magical energies, the ones in this area more unnatural the deeper you find yourself in the forest. It will rearrange to trap unaware wanderers in its depths. Although the canopy is rather impenetrable and pitch black at night, the forest produces its own light through its various glowing inhabitants. Dragons here hail from many different backgrounds, and often come and go as needed: for many, Animucapum is not a permanent home – a fact that Hemlock revels in. Formerly, the settlement in which Animucapum lay was once a civilization of early high Light and Shadow scholars – as they were called at the time, Dusks - hence the hefty amount of research and literature in the library. In its heyday, before Shadow sunk beneath Light, it was a sub-city to the Hewn City, an outpost for those traveling into the city to rest up. The residents within were writers, scholars, and those seeking information otherwise. It began to split, as the combined Light-Shadow territory did. Light-blessed Gen Ones saturated the clan, and a sense of superiority began to rise amongst the dragons of early Animucapum; in a sense, they are the divide between Light scholars and Shadow strategists. In search of truth, these paladins fought for the city, their city as they wanted it to be. Early Shadow dragons did nothing; they submit, allowing the Light dragons to cause their own chaos, one to another: and so they did. (Think a bunch of Type A personalities with radically different viewpoints trying to cooperate.) Arguments broke out over the smallest of things, all contributing to the biggest of things, which was the city’s eventual ransacking and abandonment. For the longest of times, the city was left desolate, but not decayed. The city has faint strange magical and supernatural properties, as Hemlock has learned. It is essentially an attractor for the paranormal and downright off. ----- Back to top
