The Founding
The Smokeveil Clan was founded upon three inspirations: the love of our clan chief and his mate for each other; their enchantment with the beauty of the forest, falls, and river; and their vision of a place where peaceful dragons of any flight could live together in harmony with the burgeoning life and natural wonders of the land. The clan that was thus formed became their shared Charge. They made it known throughout the Exchanges that they were welcoming dragons who were in search of a new start, and the following dragons either came forth to join them or were bought into the clan; we now consider these to be the clan’s elders: Dzhawn, Seraphinx, Ffene, Feoii, Xsendre, Seishirou, Hakukin, Suufu, Kyrszith, and the Exalted, Less and Flowerbat. By the Gladekeeper’s grace, the clan has grown greatly since that time, and at present the Smokeveils houses over a hundred dragons, including subclans and resident guests.

Our Territory
The Smokeveil Clan’s territory centers around the beautiful Smokeveil falls, from which the clan takes its name. Here the waters of the uplands spill from the heights above to crash down amidst a forest of rock spires, sending delicate clouds of spray drifting through the air. From the falls, the broad river continues southward through the jungle until it eventually reaches the Gladeveins.
On the river’s eastern bank, near the falls, a wide, flower-strewn meadow forms the sunny heart of the clan’s territory, sloping very gradually up toward the encircling rain forest’s edge. Here hatchlings play, warrior dragons practice their skills, and all the clan’s members enjoy basking in the warmth of the sun’s light. To the north of the meadow, the cliffs and ravines hold some of the clan’s earliest shelters; many of these are now unused, but the old hatchling cave has been repurposed as a comfortable hearth-chamber by the clan’s coatls. The original hoard cave is still in use as well, although some portions of the hoard—in particular, apparel and food staples—have been removed to more convenient locations.
Farther to the east, within the rain forest, stands the clan’s current dwelling place: the Castle of Trees. This enormous, fanciful structure comprises a castle with multiple towers, surrounded by smaller dwellings, pavilions, gardens, and skyways, all formed from living, growing plants by the blessing of the Gladekeeper. In some places large enough for imperials and guardians to move about freely, in others delicate enough for a fae to feel embraced, the Castle houses nearly all of the clan’s dragons. It also flanks the clan’s nesting grounds, granting easy access for parents and the clan’s nestmother, although the nests themselves remain unsheltered, exposed to the elements of Nature in order to foster the development of the hatchlings.
The dense forest to the east and south, as well as the more rugged but equally overgrown ravines and uplands to the north, provide excellent hunting grounds for predatory dragons. The river itself, as well as the wetlands along its western bank and the deep, dark pools farther to the south, offer many different kinds of fish and other seafood. And of course, plants and insects are everywhere to be found. To avoid too much disturbance of the local area, digging and mining are undertaken at more remote locations, generally at the farther western end of the uplands, at the very edge of the clan’s territory.
Finally, a little to the east of the Castle of Trees, there stands the gigantic Exalting Tree, where the clan’s exalter performs the rites to send dragons to serve the Gladekeeper. This area is holy and very private, and is seldom seen by visitors.

There are few documented laws, as the clan chief prefers to make rulings in each individual case. However, certain principles generally hold and are listed here. (Note that this list does not constitute a formal legal document.)
No adult dragon shall be exalted without his or her consent; in addition, no dragon shall be threatened or harassed to the point of choosing exaltation.
Willing hatchlings may be exalted with the approval of both parents. If one parent is dead, exalted, has left the clan permanently, or has disavowed the hatchling, the other parent’s approval is sufficient.
All exaltation candidates should preferably be named.
A dragon shall only enter the Exchanges of his or her own free will. Any exchange price is the property of the clan as a whole, not of the dragon’s parents or other individuals.
Use of clan treasure and other resources must be approved by the clan chief. Individual dragons have free use of their own property.
Each individual shall be judged on his or her own merits; no dragon shall be discriminated against due to flight, breed, gender, or any other category.
The clan does not permit murder, forced mating or other intimacy, kidnapping, or slavery within its bounds or by its members. Fighting is allowed as long as no serious injuries are inflicted. Thievery is discouraged and may be punished if it causes conflicts.
The land and waters are the sacred property of the Gladekeeper and shall not be damaged, despoiled, or polluted.
Typical punishments range from public shaming to enforced labor and/or reparations to brief imprisonment or restraint to temporary or permanent exile. Leaders of subclans may negotiate punishments for their followers, and are usually in charge of enforcing them.
Intelligent nondragon species are protected as if they were dragons. Nondragons breaking the law may be punished more severely than dragons, up to and including death.

The mirror pack has been associated with the clan since its earliest days. In exchange for equal access to the clan’s territory, nesting grounds, and resources, they supply meat and assist with scouting and lair defense.
The Jungle Bird tundras are dedicated to the cultivation of physical beauty, grace, and diverse skills. This group of entertainers and artisans puts on regular performances, for which they have begun to acquire quite a reputation, and also crafts exquisite items for trade; in addition, they assist with lairtending, gardening, and foraging tasks.
The Cloudstreak Dancers are a small group of mystics pursuing a vision of joyous personal freedom and harmonious community. They live in the uplands, separate from the main clan and only tenuously associated with it, but they do regularly assist with scouting and message carrying.

Residents pay a reasonable guest fee that may be reduced or waived in exchange for work around lair.
The clan also offers lodgings for a limited number of short-term guests. Guests enjoy beautiful accommodations, and various amenities, entertainments, and attractions are available. Please contact our concierge, Dantienne, c/o the Smokeveil Clan, for more information.
