Company Heads - Taradiddle ("Tara"), Lior, Surface
The heads of the company are the ones who approve ideas for articles, allow or disallow dragons to stay with the clan temporarily or permanently, and evaluate the skills and traits of other dragons to designate roles for them. Additionally, they also perform typical clan-leader activities such as negotiating with other clans, decide when to expand lair space, and modify company/clan rules and policies (and related consequences) in accordance to member feedback.

The three leaders check each others' power, and the odd number makes it so that there are no ties in making decisions. Most decisions aren't passed into clan law without approval of most of the clan members. A democratic system of voting is used. However, sometimes if the leaders believe it is of the clan's best interest -- usually pertaining to drastic changes such as a move to a new territory -- they will not wait for approval from the clan. However, such things are not sprung upon them suddenly of the Company Heads can help it.

Writers, General - Zirehnda, Lothiriel, Cobalt
These guys read over notes taken by the correspondents, or take their own notes from other sources, such as travelers passing through, orphans, or exiles from other clans who are looking for someone to invite them to a new clan. They often come up with most of the ideas on what to write for their next article if they don't hear about anything new from their reporters or temporary residents.

Some sections, listed in the next post, are specific and written or dictated by other dragons in the clan.

Editors -Spumoni, Spectrum, Bad Suns ("the Suns", "Sunny")
They assign correspondents where to travel for information on news and check the reporters' notes for accuracy. They also write headlines, spot-check the articles for minor errors, and make sure articles are fair.

Correspondents - Jules, Ace, Unvyre, Haven
They travel to all corners of Sornieth to gather information about the next big scoop, be it an interesting clan or a heated dom battle. Jules is the most experienced and charming in this area, so the others look up to him.

Artists - Unvyre
He creates drawings related to the subject of the news articles. He is skilled at drawing dragon portraits. If Unvyre isn't sure what something looks like, being a correspondent helps him to study his drawing subject and make sure he gets the details right.

Distribution & Advertising - Capricorn, Kanoa, Spellstream, Inkeri
The first three ladies are large-breed dragons who lead air balloons carrying newspaper-filled crates over different regions of the world. So far, they're in charge of taking papers to other areas of the Tangled Wood, to Sunbeam Ruins, and to the Shifting Expanse. Inkeri, a Nocturne, is in charge of a small airship full of newspaper cargo. She flies the ship to Clan Cloudstone, an ally Wind clan that helps distribute papers to other parts of Sornieth that the other three ladies can't reach in one or two days.

Copiers - Ivyrose, Catawampus
Ivyrose has developed the power to copy large amounts of ink text and drawings to many leaves of parchment at once. She can also change the size to fit on large and small parchment sheets too, which enables her (and any Arcane dragon that can master this ability) to produce hundreds of newspapers in a few days. Cata, who is also an Arcane dragon, helps in this process.

Archivists - Ripsaw, Nova
Ripsaw keeps records of past issues of the Chronicle in the archives room. Nova helps him keep the archives when he needs it, but her main job is to make sure he is contained when he becomes Shade-driven.

Other Residents

Cooks - Glory, Schwifty
Spend most of the day in the kitchen, cooking meals for the clan and temporary residents. If they aren't cooking, they're relaxing, or gathering edible specimens for meals or snacks (usually with the help of temporary residents).

Merchant and Trader - Cardeulis
A skilled professional in her field, Cardeulis uses her silver tongue and outgoing personality to trade or sell goods with other clans. She's also incredibly good at winning auctions and haggling.

Crafts Dragons, Food Collectors - Reality, Xehnight
They use materials collected by Team Lacy Grinding to make goods for Carduelis to sell. When not crafting, they are also assigned to collect food for the chefs to prepare. Xehnight loves to be outside and has a good eye for bugs and foraging plants. Carduelis is, naturally, more adept at fishing, though she often goes on scavenging runs on her own.

Intern (Exalt) Trainers - Taradiddle, Rath, Ivyrose
These ladies train the interns before they begin their work under the Shadowbinder. Taradiddle and Rath work together as a team while Ivyrose trains them alone when she has time between copying sessions.

Loot Collectors- Lior, Beowulf, Fulvius
Known collectively as "Team Lacy Grinding", this group goes out into the fields to fight monsters and collect loot they get from them. They are the strongest dragons in the Company, stronger even than Taradiddle and Rath, but also the easiest to get along with. These three also handle most of the digging and hunting.

Healer - Penelope
She uses her abilities as a mage to heal her clan mates' wounds. If they are sick or infected, she turns to herbal remedies. Is new at using her powers, so her skills need training.

Treasury - Eomer
He counts the money Carduelis earns with her sales, writes budgets for the clan, and is generally in control of spending.

Mail Room - Capricorn, Taurus
Taurus sorts the letters, fanmail, newspaper subscriptions, and more that come in while Capricorn delivers them to different mail-carrying clans in the Tangled Wood.

Alchemist Mage - Jarrabyss
A mysterious mage who is in charge of all alchemy experiments. Often aids the crafters in creating goods for Carduelis to sell. He is conducting research on how to fix Ripsaw's Shade curse.

Gardener, Sentry - Get
Maintains the gardens and arrangements around the buildings, which includes normal mushrooms and flowers as well as plant familiars. When strangers come walking down the path, the lively Janustraps or Stranglers sometimes cause a commotion, which alert Get to check what's up. If it seems like danger, he leaps into action.

Tree Maintenance - Lyrics, Renar
Use their Nature powers to maintain the health of the giant tree the clan calls home.

Former Residents

Quinine - former alchemist and crafter, she moved in with her son in Clan Cloudstone in the Twisting Crescendo to work on alchemist projects with him.

Storyteller - Duel
A well-traveled Nocturne with malformed front legs, Duel was a seasoned storyteller who had learned the art from some of the best in Sornieth. While he told stories to his clan, one of the writers was scrawling down his words to put it into a special fictional column in the newspaper.

Office and Home Layout

The Cloakscreen territory is made up mainly of gargantuan evergreen trees, grown thick with dark needles. These trees are enormous, thick, and strong. The packing and shipment area uses some crumbled walls of huge ruins as a base, as well. Being located in the Foxfire Bramble, thorny vines climb the bases of the trees and surround most ground-floor doorways.

Outdoor Surroundings

Paved stone walkways surround both the work and dorm buildings. Grand signs pointing out the work building stand around the picket fences and along the walkways, while a sign reading "Authorized Personnel Only, Keep Out" stands beside the single path that leads to the living quarters.

On the sides of each stone path is a beautiful collection of plants. Some are glowing mushrooms, alight in several different shades of blue and green. Others are flowers and small trees covered with moss that grows exclusively in the Tangled Wood. There are also plant familiars; common Janustraps are the most populous, with the Greenroot variety coming in second. Get loves his Janustraps—he loves all of his plants and familiars, really—and spends most of his day caring for them.

The Janustraps are actually the first line of "defense" against potentially hostile dragons. If there is a commotion among the plants on one part of the premises, Get is sure to show up soon enough to interrogate the intruders, or show them the way inside the lobby.

Work Building

The work building is located inside and underneath the largest giant evergreen in the territory, which is as large as two football fields. The bottom part of the tree has been carved out from within to create the lobby. The tall entrance door is wooden with a tall glass window. The floor is made of finished wood. Support beams stand like columns throughout the lobby to hold up ceiling and the rest of the huge tree. The lobby has a long, low wooden coffee table surrounded by Mauler-hide rugs for guests to sit on. Several large fish tanks stand around the lobby, filled with colorful fish, cared for by Cobalt. There is a little reception desk, where Thorne

The work building is the width and length of two football fields, three stories high, built from the ghastly evergreens that used to stand where the building is now. The ground floor has two sections: A lobby for visitors to the company to wait and get information, and the archives room. Stone support beams stand like columns throughout the lobby to hold up the higher floors. The lobby has a small wooden table and some comfortable chairs, along with several babbling fish tanks. Li'l Miss is in charge of the reception desk on the rare occasion there are visitors. Usually she works in the archives room with her partner, Ripsaw.

The ground floor is also where the mail room is located. Taurus works here to sort both incoming and outgoing mail. Capricorn is fairly good at delivering all the outgoing mail herself after returning from her rounds with the Distro Team. If she needs help, Taurus has a map of her mail route. He also goes into the treehouses to alert temporary residents if they receive any mail.

The second story is where the larger breeds work. They have desks and chairs set up to serve as their work spaces. Dragons such as Spectrum, Cata, Dixie, and Cobalt work up here. The third story is much the same as the second, except it's more suited for smaller breeds such as Ivyrose, Zirehnda, and Spumoni. There are plenty of windows for fresh air, and the building is well-wired to allow for electric lighting.

Shipment Area

The shipment area is about a quarter-mile away from the living quarters and main work building, in a field cleared of trees and mushrooms. It consists of the Packing Room, where unfolded papers are delivered for folding and packing into chests, and of the launch pad area, where the Guardians of the distro team launch their hot air balloons, and where Exodius launches the delivery airship.

Living Quarters

The living quarters is about a hundred meters away from the work building. Its layout is much the same as the work building, with a large, three-story building. This area also includes a basement floor, however, which is where the hoard is located.

The ground floor is the kitchen/dining hall area, the common room, and the nursery. The common room is furnished with a stone slab used for a table, plenty of lighting, and comfortable chairs, a futon, and half a dozen beanbag chairs of all sizes. Dragons gather in the common room to chill and spend time together. The nursery is down a short hallway: the walls here are thick so as not to disturb sleeping nesters. There are currently four nests, broken tree trunks that were planted into the ground to make it seem more natural.

The dining hall is large, with several huge, wooden tables. with a chandelier overhead. The clan members typically eat breakfast and dinner together. The kitchen, connected to the dining hall, is much smaller, with counters and floors made mostly of stone.

Despite the wiring for electricity, their source is not a constant one: every morning, Beowulf and Spectrum, the Lightning dragons, must use their limited powers to recharge the "electric machine" that gives power to both buildings. The electricity is good from sunrise to sunset, and then it turns off for the night. Any dragons who want to be up past sundown must use candles, glowing or bio-luminescent reptile tails, or unicorn dust as a light source. For this reason, the kitchen does not use a refrigerator: At least three or four times a week, Eizo and Larkspur journey out to trade for blocks of ice from dragons who have the means to keep it cool. Their "fridge" is really just a giant cooler where they keep all their perishables to maintain freshness.

The entrance to the vault is located behind a pantry in the kitchen, kept secret to prevent theft.

The upper two floors are bedrooms for the dragons: larger, heavier dragons nest on the second floor, while smaller ones nest in the third floor. Of course, mates of different sizes often prefer to sleep together.

The basement of the living quarters is the hoard and the communal closet. All the miscellaneous items are organized by Fulvius, and typically sold in bulk by Cardeulis as part of the clan's income. This includes trinkets, various materials, treasure chests, and apparel. The apparel typically isn't "claimed" by anyone unless someone is wearing it, or otherwise has it in their possession. If a piece of apparel that used to be in the closet but is now being worn by a dragon belongs to that dragon, and no squabbles will be accepted regarding who is wearing what.

Temporary Resident Housing

Above the living quarters is a network of about twenty tree houses where the homeless and interns live. They are connected by wooden bridges, and there are huge stone steps to each tree house so flightless dragons can reach them. Each tree house can hold either four very large dragons, six to eight medium dragons, or ten small dragons like Spirals and Fae. There is plenty of bedding for everyone in each large tree house. Jars of Cerdae and Unicorn sparkle are used as a natural light source, as wiring would be too complicated for electricity in the tree houses.

Basilisk and Cockatrice are actually the same species. Cockatrice are exclusively male; basilisk are exclusively female. They rival Nocturnes in size with basilisk being slightly smaller and lighter in weight.

They typically live in deciduous forests, with the most common areas being the forested ruins on the border of the Sunbeam Ruins and the Tangled Wood. During seasons when food is plentiful, basilisks will lay 1 egg per day or per 2 days, regardless of the presence of males.

Basilisks are too heavy to fly, but they can flutter by wildly flapping their wings. They leap into trees to sleep on branches or similar perches. Females that are ready to lay will dig out a small nest hidden under brush or the tangle of tree roots.

Hatchlings

Hatchlings born to couples in the company are raised a short while and, for the most part, allowed to grow up with their own interests and abilities. A lot of them are also raised to be helpful to the company. However, most either lose interest in the newspaper business or go on to do writing, editing, etc. with other clans. Often they show interest in leaving home at a young age and go off to new clans early. Sometimes they stay behind to become interns.

Exiles, Orphans, etc.

In recent months, the Cloakscreen Company has decided to open its doors to exiles, orphans, and otherwise clanless dragons who are in need of a temporary place to stay. Most of them perform some kind of labor, such as digging in archaeological sites, scavenging for loose goods, or gathering food for Eizo and Larkspur. These dragons live in the tree houses together, and they are welcome to fetch meals from the kitchen whenever such food is prepared.

These dragons are often on a timer when it comes to finding a permanent clan. If they are not successful within a few weeks, they are asked to leave, or join in the intern training program, described below.

Exaltees

Clanless dragons who aren't able to find a permanent home and don't want to face going out into the world without shelter usually volunteer to sign up for the internship program. They undergo training with Taradiddle and Rath on journalism and how to take notes, conduct brief interviews, and write facts and short articles to send back to the Company for review and publishing. Once they graduate the program, they are sent to the Shadowbinder, who protects the interns as they go to the battlefield and make reports.

It is because of these brave, fledgling journalists that the Chronicle can make accurate reports about exalt numbers, who has recently passed away, and which flights are vying for dominance over the realm.

The wetland that was the Mire was famous for the lively plants that surrounded it, the reeds and the trees that grew in abundance. It was largely uninhabited by dragonkind. Dangerous Shade-bound wildlife lurked in its waters and nested in the thick greenery instead, feeding off of smaller insects, fish, and plant life. Ivyrose continued, “Anyway, that's part of the reason why you two are training. If the Shade ever returns in its entirety, you two and any other interns I train will be the first to know, so you need to be able to send a report back to the Company as soon as possible. The Chronicle may be the first source to get out that kind of important battlefield information. You should be taking notes; are you taking notes?” The two interns removed their small notepads from their satchels and hurriedly began scribbling. The cattails at the water’s edge bowed and rustled with movement. Two Poisonous Toridae scurried out of the bush, one holding a brown sphere in its jaws and the other chasing after it, its teeth clacking noisily in want of its companion’s treasure. The interns stiffened when the aggressive blue gator turned on the trio. Ivyrose gave them a confident smirk. “Stay back,” she advised, “and take notes!” The beast was almost as large as she was, its body shorter but much thicker. Its squat legs carried it at an alarming pace, but Ivyrose was faster. Her long tail coiled around her waist like a belt, she raked the Toridae’s side with her claws hard enough to knock it onto his back, gouging its flesh Before it could roll itself over, she raised both her hands, which glowed in a faint red light, and rent its body apart with remarkable force. “Look out!” cried the Tundra. The other Toridae had dropped its round prize and was closing in fast. Before Ivyrose could react, the creature reared up and slashed at her with its own short, hooked claws, leaving a deep wound on the side of her lengthy neck. With a cry of pain, she retaliated with her own slash, catching the Toridae across the jaw, dislocating it. It met a similar end to its companion when she brought down her shining red claws over its body. Breathing heavily, she turned to her trainees and huffed, “And that’s how you do it.” Clutching his large pearl in the coil of his tail, the Pearlcatcher hurried to her side, careful not to step on any remains. He inspected her wound and asked a bit frantically, “Ivyrose, are you alright?” She wiped away the blood that marred her emerald-green scales. “I’ll be fine, I assure you. It’s only a flesh wound, that’s all. I get them all the time out here while training interns just like you. Those Toridae are nothing to scoff at, no sir; they’re a lot more aggressive than those croakers. The croakers will float around as they try to build their power, but these Toridae… they build their energy by attacking others. That's what makes them quite dangerous.” The Pearlcatcher offered her a hankerchief from his satchel, and Ivyrose took it gratefully to place on her neck wound. She continued, “Lesson number two, my dears: if someone on the battlefield is going at you just like those Toridae, skip the report and fight, fight, fight! Take notes! Then we can look at their spoils.” The Tundra finished scrawling her notes before stepping over the carnage on the lakeside. The spot where the first Toridae had been slain had an old boot and a half-digested gar amid the wetness. Crouching, she picked both up with her clawtips and held them up for Ivyrose to see. “This one ate something it shouldn’t have.” Ivyrose laughed. “I’m always finding those chew toys in Toridae bellies. It’s like those things are so hungry, they’ve never seen food before, so they just swallow whatever they get their big ole mouths around. I imagine half the time they’re cranky, it’s because they’ve got an upset stomach.” She sprang over to the Tundra with the enthusiasm of a flea and placed the boot in her loot collection sack. “Carduelis says some clans near the Shadowbinder’s amphitheatre love these things and will pay a nice chunk of coin for them. And this,” she added, plucking the fish from her charge’s claw, “will make a good snack for someone.” The Tundra grimaced, and the Pearlcatcher audibly gagged, as their instructor placed it with the other goods. Ivyrose took a gliding bound towards the water, where the Toridae had dropped its round object. She slipped her claws underneath it, and just by feeling its smooth surface, she knew what it was. It was as large as a watermelon, and two small leaves sprouted from its top. Her large pink eyes grew even larger as her interns gathered near. “What is it?” the Pearlcatcher wanted to know. “It’s a Nature egg…” Ivyrose whispered. “How do you suppose it got there?” asked Ivyrose to the three Company Heads as they sat around the egg. She had returned from escorting her interns to the Shadowbinder’s domain and collected their required internship fees. Taradiddle and Lior both shrugged. Lior, the token Guardian, suggested, “Perhaps the Toridae stole it from its nest?” “That’s absurd, Lior; the Mire is so far away from the Viridian Labyrinth,” pointed out Taradiddle. “Toridae don’t migrate.” “Then how do you think the thing got a hold of it?” “I’ve fought in the Mire before I joined this clan; it’s not uncommon for those things to float down the Gladeveins into the Mire. I imagine most of them get eaten by predators…” Surface, the oracle, spoke then. “The ‘how’ of the matter is not important now. What we need to decide is what to do with the egg.” “Sell it!” shouted Taradiddle, before adding hastily, “What I mean by that is, we could adopt it out to a loving, responsible clan who can take care of it when it hatches, for a fee.” Lior rolled her eyes. “All you think about is making treasure.” “I’m just thinking about what’s best for the Company and the egg!” “Not a good idea,” murmured Surface. “At least, not at the moment. I foresee things will not bode well for our egg if we adopt it out right away. He picked up another stack of papers, an issue of The Cloakscreen Chronicle, and folded it swiftly into a thick, neat square before placing it into a chest. Also in the Packing Room were the members of the distribution team, filling chests for tomorrow morning’s delivery run. Cradling the large egg, Ivyrose nodded. “Yep! I had the feeling that, since both of you haven’t really been able to care for an egg all by yourselves before, you would want the chance to do so now. I’ve talked about it with the Heads, and they all agree that you and Fulvius would make an excellent pair of parents and guardians.” With a squeal, Beowulf leaned forward and gave her nose a few exuberant rubs with his own. “Ivyrose! Oh, this is such an honor! Fulvius is going to be ecstatic! Thank you so much; you’re a gem!” To the Plaid Cabbie Distro Team, he announced, “I’m going to take a quick break, alright? I’ll be back in a jiffy. I’ll take the cart back to the mail room, too.” The three Guardian ladies gave quick nod before returning to their work. Exodius, the token Fae and the newest member of the team, said, “Your help is greatly appreciated. Hurry back.” “You’ve got it! Let’s go, Ivyrose. Fulvi is in the hoard, I think.” The two small dragons glided out of the packing room and outside to the huge wagon pulled by a pair of Clown Chargers. They hopped into the back of the empty wagon, used to pull loads of disorganized newspapers to the packing area for shipment. Ivyrose kept hold of the egg while Beowulf took the reins and had the chargers pull it back to the main work building. They placed the chargers back into their holding pens and took the egg down the path to the living quarters building. Once inside, Beowulf took the lead down the massive stair-steps to the hoard, calling, “Oh, Fuuulvius~! Are you down here, sugarmelon?” Fulvius’s huge, gentle voice boomed, “Yes, I am.” Holding tight to her egg, Ivyrose glided into the hoard after Beowulf, where every object was kept in a neat pile with others of its kind. It seemed the huge, brightly-colored Imperial was collecting the sand into the tiniest of pouches. Beowulf fluttered up to Fulvius’s face and said, “Guess what, Fulvi?” “I got you and Beowulf a present today!” Ivyrose chirped, landing on the ground before Fulvius and presenting the egg. “The Company Heads have asked you guys to take care of this Nature egg for us, until it either hatches or finds a new home in another clan. Whichever happens first.” Allowing his Skydancer mate to perch on his antlers, Fulvius leaned his massive head down to look at Ivyrose and the egg. His eyes filled with tears of joy the more he gazed at it. “Why, Ivyrose, we would love to take care of this egg. For as long as the Heads need us to, in fact.” He extended one of his hands and cradled the little seed when the Spiral set it in his palm. Straightening up, he held it in both hands, smiling down at it. “Oh, one more thing, though,” Ivyrose added, “the baby dragon’s growth may have been interrupted when it fell out of whatever nest it came from, so it might not hatch as soon as a typical clutch of eggs, so don’t worry too much if it doesn’t.” Beowulf fluttered down to perch on the edge of one of Fulvius’s hands, petting the egg oh so gently. “This little one can take all the time he needs.” “Or she,” Fulvius added. “‘They’ seems appropriate,” Ivyrose suggested. “‘They’, of course.” Fulvius nodded. To Beowulf, he said, “My sacridite, do you have work to be doing? I can look after our egg if you’re busy.” “Oh, yes, I actually have to get back to the shipment area. Thank you, love, for egg-sitting for me.” Beowulf kissed Fulvius’s nose before flying off towards the stair steps out of the hoard. Over his shoulder he called, “Thanks again, Ivyrose.” The Imperial nodded down at the Spiral. “We very much appreciate the chance to be parents by ourselves.” Ivyrose grinned up at him. “It was my pleasure. “…so although the Shade destroyed itself in attacking the Pillar of the World,” Ivyrose finished, taking a breath, “billions of pieces of its form still haunt Sornieth, and many of them have overtaken creatures such as the croakers we've just encountered.”

“That was an earful,” said the young Tundra intern.

“It always is with Spirals,” whispered her fellow intern, a Pearlcatcher.

“Don't think I can't hear you back there; I have ears, you know,” admonished Ivyrose, stopping near a mucky lake.

You should be taking notes; are you taking notes?”

The two interns removed their small notepads from their satchels and hurriedly began scribbling.

“Stay back,” she advised, “and take notes!”

The beast was almost as large as she was, its body shorter but much thicker.

Breathing heavily, she turned to her trainees and huffed, “And that’s how you do it.”

Clutching his large pearl in the coil of his tail, the Pearlcatcher hurried to her side, careful not to step on any remains. He inspected her wound and asked a bit frantically, “Ivyrose, are you alright?”

She wiped away the blood that marred her emerald-green scales. That's what makes them quite dangerous.”

The Pearlcatcher offered her a hankerchief from his satchel, and Ivyrose took it gratefully to place on her neck wound. She continued, “Lesson number two, my dears: if someone on the battlefield is going at you just like those Toridae, skip the report and fight, fight, fight! Take notes! Then we can look at their spoils.”

The Tundra finished scrawling her notes before stepping over the carnage on the lakeside. The spot where the first Toridae had been slain had an old boot and a half-digested gar amid the wetness. Crouching, she picked both up with her clawtips and held them up for Ivyrose to see. “This one ate something it shouldn’t have.”

Ivyrose laughed. And this,” she added, plucking the fish from her charge’s claw, “will make a good snack for someone.”

The Tundra grimaced, and the Pearlcatcher audibly gagged, as their instructor placed it with the other goods.

Lior, the token Guardian, suggested, “Perhaps the Toridae stole it from its nest?”

“That’s absurd, Lior; the Mire is so far away from the Viridian Labyrinth,” pointed out Taradiddle. “Toridae don’t migrate.”

“Then how do you think the thing got a hold of it?”

“I’ve fought in the Mire before I joined this clan; it’s not uncommon for those things to float down the Gladeveins into the Mire. I imagine most of them get eaten by predators…”

Surface, the oracle, spoke then. “The ‘how’ of the matter is not important now. What we need to decide is what to do with the egg.”

“Sell it!” shouted Taradiddle, before adding hastily, “What I mean by that is, we could adopt it out to a loving, responsible clan who can take care of it when it hatches, for a fee.”

Lior rolled her eyes. “All you think about is making treasure.”

“I’m just thinking about what’s best for the Company and the egg!”

“Not a good idea,” murmured Surface. “At least, not at the moment. I foresee things will not bode well for our egg if we adopt it out right away. The forces of the Flamecaller and the Shadowbinder are preparing for a clash, and there is a high possibility the egg will be destroyed in the turmoil if not kept safe.”

Taradiddle huffed. “Then who will watch over it until it’s time for it to go? Or until it hatches, if that comes first?”

Ivyrose piped up. “Oh, I know! I know the perfect dragons who would love to watch over it for us!”

“Who?” asked Lior and Taradiddle in unison. Surface only smiled knowingly.

Ripsaw hung back as Spellstream approached Penelope, the newly arrived healer. She asked, “How is Surface?” “He's currently sleeping off the anesthetic I gave him,” she said. “And his injuries?” Penelope sighed and turned her square-shaped head at the nest made for Surface. He was coiled in blankets woven from restored scrap fabric, bandages all over his face and various places on his body. “His bodily wounds closed up quickly. He had a tear in one wing that I sewed up; if he doesn't aggravate it, it'll heal just fine. The most grievous injury was his left eye.” Spellstream heard Ripsaw choke down a sob behind her. When she leaned closer to listen, he told her, “Please continue doing your best with Ripsaw.” “I would be better off training to do more than my best; I will do that instead.” Surface’s eye twinkled. “We need more dragons like you.” Spellstream turned around and padded out of the infirmary, with Ripsaw following close behind.
