We are but one of many of the many forges here in the Ashfall Waste. But don't let that fool you, life is very eventful here, no two days are ever the same. We focus in creating art, and we also act as a trading hub to the other flights! Take a look at our wares and maybe you'll find something you like. The air was surprisingly clear despite being near a couple open pools of lava. Soot and ash did not hang in the air, but it did cover the ground like a light dust. A calm little pocket in the Ashfall Waste that allowed dragons from all over to visit and purchase wares. A large figure lumbered over to you, his armor temporarily hiding who he was. But once he came into your sight, the Guardian stood out quite a bit from the fiery colors of the Ashfall Wastes, his lightly colored hide seemed to belong more in the frozen tundra of the Southern Icefields. Yet his warm orange eyes showed his true nature as a gentle giant. "Greetings traveler." He stated. "And welcome to the Ruby Ironworks. Have you traveled far?" He smiled kindly under his iron helm, welcoming you to the lair of the Ruby Ironworks. Friendly chatter and merchant stalls lined the main path. Behind all the conversation, a ringing also was heard, the constant clanging on metal that is often heard in the forges. “I go by Lyre, I’m the head of this clan along with my mate Embyr. I do hope you find everything you’re looking for. Feel free to look around!” The dragon said, with that he turned and walked to the base of the mountain where three large caves were. He went to the one intended for sleeping you guessed. A female mirror was sitting near the entrance, apparently waiting for him. The mirror was the color of the golden ore many metallurgists work with, her wings a deep maroon. Fireproof wraps covered her arms and legs, her claws underneath seemed pretty beaten up, but not from the forges; perhaps she was a fighter in her past? Deciding to wander through this market a bit you noticed how peaceful everyone was. Until you noticed the signs posted every now and again. “This is a conflict free zone” was written on them. You supposed that would make sense. The ringing of the forges became clearer as you wandered deeper into the market. Curious, you move to find the source. Finally stumbling upon the clan’s very own small forge. Not much armor was being made, but art was everywhere. Small statuettes of dragons and Her Lady Flamecaller. Familiars helped bringing tools and hunks of raw ore to-and-fro for the dragons at work. One of said dragons was a sky-blue Tundra, her belly a vibrant orange. An earthy colored Snapper was beside her, pointing out the weak spots in the rocks and where to strike to get the cleanest break. Together they were making what appeared to be a fair number of pendants. Each one having a different precious stone set in them. The Tundra looked up from her work, just now noticing you watching. “Oh hello! I didn’t see you there. Are you interested in purchasing one of our necklaces? They’re a clan staple! We have a wide range of colors to choose from.” She motioned to the pendants, all freshly made. She herself was wearing one made from Lapis Lazuli. Deciding to buy one you pulled out a few coins from your pouch, handing them to her. She picked one out that complimented your eyes and hung it around your neck. “Thank you! You look great with it on.” With a cheerful smile she quickly went back to work, now using amber to make a new set of pendants. Deciding to leave her to her work you continue exploring. Purchasing a snack along the way. A young Nocturne crashed into you, falling backwards with a squeal. “Sorry!” They chirped, hopping on their feet and running off again, hearing the excited squeal of hatchlings as they played tag. Then the shout of an annoyed parent. Continuing on your way you noticed your snack was a bit smaller than before your encounter with that hatchling. With a sigh you finish it off. “Asher got you too huh?” A deep red Skydancer chuckled. “Don’t mind him. I’ll scold him later. Are you finding everything alright?” You nod, mentioning that you were only passing through. “I see. Well if you’re interested, I suggest meeting our clan’s scholar Vukan. He knows everything about this place.” With new directions you head over to where you spot an imperial with a fiery mane and wings was sitting apart from everyone else. He had a large book propped up in front of him and a few scrolls in a neat pile nearby. As you drew closer to the imperial, he looked up from his book, adjusting his glasses. "Hello there, I presume you're new to the Ironworks?" You merely nod, apologizing for interrupting his studies. "Nonsense, I was just enjoying some light reading! My name is Vukan, what can I help you with?" You stared at the thick tome for a moment, 'light reading? That book is massive!' You thought. But deciding you've seen weirder you choose not to comment on it and just explained you were exploring the clan. "Ah! A traveler hm? Would you perhaps like to learn about how this clan was founded? It's quite the story." You decide to listen and settle down in front of the imperial. He smiles and starts speaking: “It started when a young Mirror dragon named Embyr was exiled from her pack for being too "gentle". She was a former fighter, but her true talent rested with the forges and the arts. As she wandered through the lands of the Ashfall wastes she was met by a Guardian clothed in armor who went by the name Lyre. The two had found a mutual ground, Embyr became the Guardian's charge. Thus, the two started building a clan together--" the Imperial scholar was interrupted by a Skydancer who seemed to be a bit of a grump. "Vukan quit boring the guests with stories. Has no one even offered a meal if they were hungry?" The Skydancer looked like he came straight from the Shifting expanse. "Raiden, I should ask why you haven't offered them." The lightning dragon looked slightly taken aback, "I'm too busy to do any of that! I organize patrols and keep everything in order!" The Imperial merely laughed, "Traveler, you will find dragons from every corner of Sornieth here but worry not. That's what makes this clan so great. We can learn from each other and form bonds with the other flights. I hope you will too." With that the scholar packed up his scrolls and walked away, leaving you to explore on your own. On the cover is a the initial "K" pressed into the tough leather. It appears to be a journal of a dragon who lives here. The writing is messy, but readable. Though more than once, the author's name isn't. You read trough to try and figure out the owner of the book. A young dragon named Kaseko gave me this journal to practice my penmanship. I hardly understand why, even as a human I don’t think it was very good to begin with. My mind is sharpened as a fighter, not a scribe. However, I will write in here nonetheless to… appease his wishes. I still don’t know their intent or power they wield. I must remain cautious. I will use this journal to record my findings in this world, as well as any possible way back home. If I had a family there, I have no memory of it. The only thing I remember is my name. I will close this off here, their healer seems to need me for something. -K __________________________________________________________________ K's Journal Entry Two ____________ Day two since my arrival The patrol that had found me spoke with me today. Apparently, I had fought them when I temporarily awoke from whatever coma-like state I was in. I had fought well enough to deal out a few wounds to the dragons. I apologized quickly in fear that they might hold a grudge. Turns out it wasn’t the case. They liked that I could fight. The leader of the group, a feathered dragon named Blayze asked if I could train with them once I was fully healed. I don’t know if I should take up on their offer, I should already focus on getting back home… -K __________________________________________________________________ K's Journal Entry Three ____________ Day three since my arrival. The horned-pearl-carrying dragon who has been keeping an eye on me said he knew a few dragons who claimed to be humans at one point. I eagerly asked if I could meet them and he agreed to take me. We walked to a large cave that seemed to be the main sleeping area for these dragons. I was greeted by eight dragons who were nothing more than teenagers! They asked if I played this “Sburb” game. I have no idea what they’re talking about… -K [nextcol] [/columns] [columns] [nextcol] K's Journal Entry Four ____________ It’s strange, the situation I’m in. A human turned dragon in a completely different realm. It’s been days since my last entry, but it’s because I had taken it upon myself to learn how this world operates. I learned about the great Eleven Gods. I learned how to fight with this new form. I learned the names of the dragons who saved me and what species they are. I live in a clan called the Ironworks. They run a trading business with other clans and flights, mostly with Earth, Water, and Lightning. Occasionally Wind as well. But their trade business is not all they do. There are many artisans in the clan, and many skilled fighters as well. They claim the latter is because of thieves, but they fight way better than having to fight of mere thieves… I want to trust these dragons. They saved my life, offered me a place in their home, and taught me their ways. I owe them everything. -K __________________________________________________________________ K's Journal Entry Five ____________ The young tundra dragon named Kaseko approached me today, claiming he saw me writing in this journal a few times and was curious what it was. I answered it is my findings of this world, nothing he doesn’t already know. The kid seemed nervous to talk to me ever since I started training with Vudall and Blayze. I’m not sure why, I fight now not only to protect myself but to protect the clan. Do I frighten him? -K __________________________________________________________________ K's Journal Entry Six ____________ It’s been a month since I have arrived, as far as I can tell. I haven’t made many entries as of late. I have been training and learning more about this world. I hear that in the Light and Arcane regions there are scholars who study things that might help me get home… I want to get into contact with them, even if I have to fly there myself. Perhaps I can ask Embyr and Lyre for permission to go. -K [nextcol] [/columns] [columns] [nextcol] K's Journal Entry Seven ____________ I no longer am suspicious of the clan’s natural ability to fight. I found out this week from what I can only call war. They called it “Dominance”. A battle in honor of the gods. A mystical stone in each region shows the symbol of which Flight has the most Dominance over the battle. The strange thing is, some of these are organized so one has a significant lead over the other, and everyone is okay with it. Then a huge celebration occurs at the end to honor that flight. Apparently, all of Sornieth joins in on this massive festival. We are currently preparing for the Flameforger’s Festival as the Summer months slowly end. You pick up a book as you wander through the clan. On the cover is a the initial "K" pressed into the tough leather. It appears to be a journal of a dragon who lives here. The writing is messy, but readable. Though more than once, the author's name isn't.
You read trough to try and figure out the owner of the book.

K's Journal
Entry One
____________

It’s been a day since these dragons found me and brought me to their home.

Entry Two
____________

Day two since my arrival
The patrol that had found me spoke with me today. I don’t know if I should take up on their offer, I should already focus on getting back home…

Entry Three
____________

Day three since my arrival.
I have no idea what they’re talking about…

Entry Four
____________

It’s strange, the situation I’m in.

Entry Five
____________

The young tundra dragon named Kaseko approached me today, claiming he saw me writing in this journal a few times and was curious what it was. I answered it is my findings of this world, nothing he doesn’t already know. The kid seemed nervous to talk to me ever since I started training with Vudall and Blayze. I’m not sure why, I fight now not only to protect myself but to protect the clan. Do I frighten him?

Entry Six
____________

It’s been a month since I have arrived, as far as I can tell.

Entry Seven
____________

I no longer am suspicious of the clan’s natural ability to fight. Embyr and Lyre have taken up training some younger dragons who will fight in the upcoming battles. Eithne, is taking command of the festivities end of things. I am very confused by how this tradition started, wars I understand. Organized battles that one team is set up to win and the other lose, I do not. Perhaps Vudall will know the answer.

It appears to be the journal of a dragon new to this world. You ask around and find the owner, a dragon who looks a bit like a tundra, but not one you have ever seen before. He gives you a polite nod and thanks you for returning his journal. "Kaseko would have been devastated if I lost his gift." He gave one more glance at you before flying off towards the training clearing across the way from where you stood. He never gave you his name.

You try to push the strange dragon out of your mind and continue on your way.

Q & A wrote:
Where is your lair and how is it built?
My lair is at the base of a mountain, the three caves acting as a sleeping area, a healer's den, and storage. Other dens are built using the rocks, clay and metal supports around the caves as well, though they act more like places to sell items than sleeping dens.

How does your clan get food and what do they prefer to eat?
If you're a warrior of the clan (Which is basically if you aren't a healer or are on a nest), then you also hunt or gather food. When it is peaceful, the work is divided between border patrols and hunting patrols throughout the day.

Why fire? Does the clan have a strong connection to the land, the element or the deity?
I chose fire because that's what I related to most when I read the descriptions. A good chunk of the clan are artisans of some kind, whether it deals with metals, parchment and ink, or fabric. They are all very passionate about their work. They also double as a merchant clan to sell their wares to all of Sornieth.

No shapeshifters really, but Keske Looks different compared to the FR art. And in his lore he used to be human at some point. Everyone is different on how "feral" or "Sophisticated" they are. 90% operate at human level.

Does your lair have any social system? Ranks? Royal family etc?
There are ranks of a sort. It boils down to: Leaders > Deputy > High Ranking Warriors > Healers > Everyone else

Is your progen your clan leader? Was they ever? What about their mate?
Yes, Embyr and Lyre are my progens, they are co leaders of the clan but prefer to act alongside their clanmates than a ruler.

What's familiars role in your clan?
They either act as pets, friends, or assistants around the clan! The Ironworks are currently allied with a Centaur herd that lives in the Scorched Forest. A light colored guardian clad in armor sat behind all three of them, staying in the background as if to keep watch. Just in case anything went awry. This was the head team of warriors in the clan. The pacing mirror paused for a moment, her maroon colored wings folded loosely at her sides. "Hello and welcome to this newly installed training camp." Her voice was as smooth as a tumbled rock, it carried an air of leadership; but it didn't command obedience. "And I Embyr, as the clan leader volunteer to be one of the main instructors at this camp. Accompanying me are the well known Blayze," she motioned with a wrapped paw to the coatl, who was smiling calmly, donned in a red cloak and a rose held between his claws. "And our newest head warrior, Caliborn" she motioned next to the surly and seemingly violent green cherub dragon. He merely responded with a "Tch!" And sent a heated glare at Embyr. Making no visible reaction to his behavior the mirror continued. "This is a training camp for those who wish to become future warriors. And possibly even serve our esteemed deity, Lady Flamecaller." Excited murmurs arose through the small crowd of dragons, most seemed inexperienced with fighting and some look like they haven't so much as lifted a claw against an ember mouse. "We will divide you all into three main groups, each group will be led by one of us. Each of you were assessed for your skills prior to this meeting. You will be put with others who have similar skills to you. I do not expect complaining about who your group partners are, if a conflict should arise then you go directly to an instructor, or Lyre." She pointed to the guardian behind her "Is that understood?". A "yes ma'am!" Rang through the clearing that they were gathered in. "Alright then, let's get to work!" She smiled as the group cheered excitedly. The large group was split into three smaller ones, one based around magic and healing, one around physical combat, and the third to defense and tactical skills. The three groups would rotate until everyone had a chance to train in each category. Each session lasted a week and they all would be assessed at the end of the month. The last week reserved for independent practice and training. As the groups were split up the mirror noticed someone unfamiliar to the clan. Walking up besides the stranger she gave a gentle tap on their shoulder to get their attention. "Hello. Who might you be? I haven't seen you around here before." Her mate was out busy with the new recruits, and the clan was alive with chatter and good news. Suddenly an ash colored Skydancer bolted inside, his glasses askew and he looked rather panicked and disheveled. “E-E-Embyr! It’s horrible! S-someone, t-they--” He stammered. The Mirror dragon looked up from her work, calmly padding over to try and calm the poor Skydancer. “Keto, take a deep breath and try to calm down.” The jittery dragon nodded, doing his best to collect his thoughts. Fixing his glasses and smoothing out his ruffled feathers he sighed. “Now,” Embyr started gently. “Tell me what’s wrong.” “Well I was tallying up what was stored in the vault like I do each week.” Keto began, fidgeting with the end of his scarf, clutching the end of it tightly in his claws. “Then I realized some of the numbers didn’t add up… S-so I looked into it and no one claimed th-they took anything.” He looked around nervously. “T-there’s a thief. They s-stole at least a h-hundred gems and half of our runestones.” He fell silent, waiting for his leader’s reaction. Embyr was silent for a couple minutes as she processed the situation. “I see, you did well to tell me this. Thank you Keto. Please alert the patrols so they can keep an eye out for anyone suspicious.” She ordered, rising to her feet she dismissed the other with a flick of her tail. He dashed out in hopes of catching the next patrol before it set out. She paced back and forth in her den. Who would go to such lengths to steal from her clan’s personal stores? There was no business made today as far as she was told. Coming up with nothing she growled in frustration. Going outside she gathered up her closest senior warriors. “Lyre, Blayze. As you may have heard from our Treasurer, there has been a thief.” The pale colored Guardian and black hued Coatl nodded, their expressions grim. “Yes ma’am, I’ve already sent out our best trackers to search our territory for the scoundrel.” The Coatl responded, “And I’ve given them strict orders to bring the thief back alive.” The Guardian chuckled, his warm orange eyes glimmering with amusement at his friend’s seriousness. “So I take it you sent out Keske and Julchen.” The Coatl said nothing, so the other continued speaking. “Embyr, honey. Do you know of anyone who would be our enemy?” The golden Mirror shook her head. “That’s why I asked you two to come here. If anything, we should be able to figure out who the culprit is..” Blayze’s scowl deepened. “I know you trust me, Embyr. But I am a warrior, not a detective. My tracking skills are average at best.” The mirror nodded. “Which is why I wanted to ask you if you can get our best trackers to search the vault for any hints of who was in there before Keto.” Blayze nodded and got up to leave, already calling over two dragons to begin searching. Embyr then looked towards her mate, “Dear, could you help run a small interrogation for any suspects once the search is done?” The armored Guardian nodded. “Of course. I shall call for you when it begins.” He too got up to follow after Blayze, helping out with the investigation. Embyr took it upon herself to also search around the clan’s territory. She started by heading to the border and followed along it, trying to find any strange scents. Finding a scent that was distinctly not from any Flight she knew of made her snarl in disgust. “Harpies!” She spat. Following along the scent she found a cliffside that had a strange cave on its side. The air heavy with the scent of the harpies. Flying back to her clan she gathered her warriors, explaining what had happened. And that no dragon was responsible for what had been stolen. “The Harpies have been stealing from us!” She proclaimed. “However! I do not wish to go to war with them, I will lead a patrol to their flock’s nest and take back what is ours. If they choose to fight then we will give them a good reason to leave us alone. Is that understood?” A few of her warriors gave a positive response. “I will be taking Vudall, Brandr, and Nox!” As she listed the names, each dragon got up to prepare. “We leave at Sunhigh.” She dismissed the rest with a flick of her tail as she retreated back to her den to prepare. Lyre walked in to put away his armor. “I’m assuming I will watch over the clan until you get back.” He stated nonchalantly. Embyr hummed and gave him an affectionate nudge. “I knew I could count on you.” Sunhigh had arrived and her party was ready to set out. “Remember, there is no killing unless absolutely necessary. Got it?” The leader reminded. “Yes ma’am!” Her party replied. They set out towards the nest on the cliffside. She sent the Fae named Nox in to do some recon. The dark colored dragon silently nodded, flying in almost soundlessly. No more than five minutes later she re-emerged. “Three are awake, the rest are sleeping or away.” She reported. With a nod, Embyr signaled Vudall and Brandr to go in as quietly as possible to reclaim what is theirs. Her son, Brandr returned with a bag of gems, but Vudall was still inside. All of a sudden there was a shriek from inside, and a roar to accompany it. “Defend Vudall now! Nox, try to recover our runestones. Brandr and I will fend them off. The dragons flew into action. The guardian, mirror, and pearlcatcher fought off the Harpie flock, making sure not to deal lethal blows and just nock them aside until they heard a monotone voice from outside. “Fall back! We have what we came for!” Embyr ordered. With that they retreated to the clan, their gems and stones put back in their place in the vault. Any panic or tense mood that had settled in the air quickly dissipated as dragons saw the party return. Embyr looked to her deputy. “Blayze, can you organize a guard for our vault? I don’t want this to happen again.” The coatl nodded and hurried off to continue his duties. Returning to her den she lay down on her bed and let the exhaustion settle in her limbs, pulling her to sleep. She was dimly aware of her mate curling up around her as he too, settled down for the night. A merchant clan from the Ashfall Wastes

prologue_by_starfruit_anon-dca81wp.png

A small marketplace tucked next to the side of a mountain bustles with activity.
Stalls surrounding a clearing in the center held dragons chatting with customers, and trying to sell their wares. Many sold items for travel, and just as many sold art. Dragons from all over Sornieth were walking along the paths of stalls and gazing at the various items for sale. The air was clear of ash and smoke, so no one had trouble in the heated climate, no matter what flight they hailed from.

Behind the market stalls is a training clearing and a small forge, the ringing of hammers against metal chimes through the air almost constantly. Guards are posted at each entrance to the marketplace and patrolling the borders of the clan’s territory. While not hostile to other dragons, they are professionally serious when asking for the intentions of the approaching strangers.

A path leading off from the marketplace led to a cave, carved out in the side of the mountain where the main clan sleeps and stores their hoard. The cave is set with three different sections. The sleeping area, multiple notches are carved into the walls for sleeping nests to be built in, each nest is custom built by each dragon, to reflect their personality. The Treasury, where the funds, and valuables are stored, constantly guarded by two warriors. And the Healers den, where the sick and injured go to rest and heal.

The Imperial was currently on an outing, leaving Embyr and Lyre to guard their shared home. The two were sitting near the cave entrance when the Mirror spoke up, “Lyre?” “Hmm?” The pale Guardian didn’t glance at her, keeping an eye on the horizon. “What were you searching for when we first met.” The question caught him a bit off guard, “Why the sudden interest?” “You never continued your journey and decided to settle down here. Why?” He chuckled, “You really don’t know much about other breeds do you.” This got him a smack on the shoulder in response. “To be simple I was searching for my charge. All Guardians have one, that they will protect until death.” He paused, to gather his thoughts, choosing his words carefully. “I stopped searching because I had found my charge, you. I don’t know how I know, but it was a feeling deep within my soul.” He explained. His little speech left her silent, processing what he had said. After a long silence, she finally replied, “I see.” With that she got up to retire to bed for the night. His gaze followed her as the cave shadow swallowed her frame. ‘She may be my charge, but she is surely gaining my love.’ With a sigh he continued his watch. A dark-colored Coatl named Blayze. He treated Lyre like a brother, so Embyr let the two catch up. That is until she heard the Coatl mention finding a hatchling alone, quite possibly abandoned. That quickly caught her attention. “Is the hatchling with you?” she interjected. A hatchling should never be without a mother. The Coatl nodded. “Yes, she is close by, I’ll bring her here.” He quickly took flight, turning out of sight, but soon returning on wing with a baby Spiral curled around his neck. “She said she doesn’t remember much, poor thing.” He commented as he alighted down, carefully letting the Spiral climb off. The hatchling was trembling at the sight of the strangers, barely a peep was heard. The Mirror felt a pang in her heart at the sight of the hatchling. “I’ll take care of her.” She answered the unasked question, quickly going over to calm the hatchling, cooing gentle words to her. The males watched in amazement at the sudden change of character. She wasn’t exactly a mother, but definitely could fill that role. “Do you have a name sweetie?” Embyr asked softly. The Spiral shook her head. “Well what about Cinder? I think it suits you well.” With a nod the tiny hatchling coiled up against Embyr, finally relaxing a bit in present company. Letting her dote over the hatchling, Lyre turned to his old friend, “How would you like to stay with us? We have plenty of room, and you can keep an eye on the hatchling in case their birth mother comes searching.” The Guardian offered. Blayze nodded, “That is a sound idea. I think I will take you up on that offer.” Lyre looked at each of the dragons who now called this place their home. Within a day, the family of three turned into five, it was like they were their own small little clan. He smiled, enjoying the thought of building a clan here. ‘Perhaps we can make it official, but I will wait until this little family grows a bit more.’ ~:~ ----- ~:~ The little family of five dragons had quickly grew into a small clan. Embyr and Lyre had a son, Brandr. Who got along so well with Cinder no one would guess that they weren’t nestmates. Seraphine, a blacksmith had asked if she could set up shop here and join the clan, along with her friend Tana, a beautiful Skydancer who was a very close friend to Seraphine. The two were happily accepted, and soon the small clan had begun to put their mark on the map. Others eventually joined, which gave the clan an array of talents, but nowhere and no one to put them to use. Soon the idea of selling their trade came into play, and the clan set to work to build on the idea and make it come to life. The population of merchants grew. Outside the cave, an area was cleared so shops could be built, stalls lined the main path, where dragons began to sell their wares. It started with metal trinkets and tools, but soon grew to have a wide array of merchandise. The clan quickly became known as the Ruby Ironworks due to how the market began. There were as much tools and equipment for sale as there was artisan craft. Embyr registered the clan as a merchant clan, allowing travelling dragons to visit and purchase or trade wares. Aside from occasional thievery, things were looking good for the clan. ~:~

A few months had passed, it was safe to say that Embyr had decided to stay with the
Guardian named Lyre, Eve had joined as well, sleeping in her own nest at night and gathered useful herbs for healing purposes during the day. The Imperial was currently on an outing, leaving Embyr and Lyre to guard their shared home. The two were sitting near the cave entrance when the Mirror spoke up, “Lyre?”

“Hmm?” The pale Guardian didn’t glance at her, keeping an eye on the horizon.

“What were you searching for when we first met.”

The question caught him a bit off guard, “Why the sudden interest?”

“You never continued your journey and decided to settle down here. Why?”

He chuckled, “You really don’t know much about other breeds do you.” This got him a smack on the shoulder in response.
