1. Balance:
Large elements should be placed first to support either a symmetrical or asymmetrical arrangement. Planning around the Rule of Thirds is a good starting point for creating balance, especially in larger images.
2. Repetition:
Using multiple copies of a given item to create a visual connection across the entire image. Most easily accomplished using the ground cover items distributed in a balanced manner across the image. Asymmetrical usually recommended for organic objects, unless a very artificial arrangement is desired.
3. Emphasis:
Using contrast to make a certain area stand out more. Contrast in size can be achieved by massing items together in clumps rather than attempting an even distribution. Using a different colour is also a useful way to achieve emphasis, such as by placing specific creatures against plants or tree leafs in a complementary colour, or isolating their silhouette against a blank background.
4. Movement:
Creatures should always either i) face the centre of the image ii) face each other. Placing them on different vertical levels also helps to lead the eye around the whole picture.
5. Pattern:
Patterns are generally expressed through the pixel assets themselves. Each tree/plant includes a form of organic patterning in the repeating leaves and fruits. The planter pots enforce an inorganic pattern through the triangle/diamond prints that mark them as being part of the same set regardless of the colour difference.
6. Unity:
The feeling of harmony across the entire image. Using all of the other principles combined is very effective to creating unity. Ways to encourage unity include i) Planning a colour scheme (i.e. monochrome, analagous, complementary), ii) Overlapping items to link and form a connection together, iii) Repeating items with similar shape/pattern

Introduction to Principles of Design:
A few basic guidelines and the principles they relate to
1.
3.
