Day 10 - The Sunbeam Ruins. Awareness 273/900

It turned out that Solin really was just … angry.

I had been hoping that maybe he was just agitated from hatching, but that didn’t seem to be the case. He was calm enough as we woke up, sleepily uncurling himself and blinking. I started handing out food, insects for Keir and I, plants for Solin, and I let the Storm Seeker and sparrowmouse have their pick before I tucked our supplies away. As soon as everyone was done eating, Solin got agitated again and wouldn’t let us near him.

Only after both Keir and I had talked to him for a good half an hour did he let Keir pick him up – he starts baring his teeth at me if I try. I think he’s too heavy for Keir – she struggled to carry him as we flew further into the Sunbeam Ruins, and eventually we just decided to walk.

I’ve also been antsy.

Really antsy.

I’m not really sure what the cause is – my muscles feel sore in a I-gotta-run-right-now kind of way, and the slightest provocation makes me shoot off a spark.

I can only hope that it’ll go away or I can figure out what’s wrong. I went to the Training Fields again and blasted through some monsters, but that only helped so much. Keir seems worried, but I tried to reassure her and we both forgot about me when Solin suddenly ran off.

When we finally found him, he was gnawing on something – oh holy Lightweaver, why?

d5f28402-ba12-4c6e-839a-5f6ffcc1c3ae.png

“Lan …” Keir said when I came back to our little camp, egg in one hand and Solin squirming under my other arm, “is that …”

“Yep,” I said, letting Solin squirm out of my grip and ignoring him when he growled at me. “It’s an egg … another one.”

I’m so shocked – I’m really happy, but also just … astounded. ovo
I’m also a bit behind on writing … I blame my animation final. :<

I finally finished my animation class though – what a relief! ;w; Also, I might need to revise my formulas for the next regions … I don’t feel like they’re working that well … II. Day 11 - The Sunbeam Ruins. Awareness 396/900 I woke up to Solin yelling in my ear. We had assumed the normal sleeping position – my wing draped over Keir with Solin, the birds, and the new Light egg tucked between us – and I quickly jerked up at the same time Keir grabbed the egg and bent down to make sure Solin was alright. We both looked around, the Storm Seeker finding my shoulder and the sparrowmouse finding Keir’s, but there wasn’t anything out of the ordinary. There was a bit of mist, and everything smelled damp, but Keir and I exchanged glances once we both realized there was no danger. I looked at the little Tundra yelling angrily and looking distressed, a nervous feeling coiling in my stomach. “Gods above Solin, what’s wrong?” He whipped his head towards me and his yelling calmed. Solin turned slowly towards Keir, and she gave him a shaky smile. “It’s alright,” she soothed, “we’re here.” Solin cocked his head like he was listening to Keir and then relaxed, looking curiously up at her sparrowmouse. My Storm Seeker cawed and they both flew down, hopping around Solin (more cautiously than my Storm Seeker hopped around Keir, I noted), playing with him. Keir edged around them and touched my arm. “What was that about?” she whispered, looking at the angry hatchling. I shook my head. “I don’t know. I’m pretty sure he just has an angry personality, but he seemed … scared?” We both fell silent, watching Solin chase the Storm Seeker. I closed my eyes. I couldn’t do this. Keir, sure, she was an easy hatchling – and smart to boot. I was able to take care of her because I thought it would be temporary. I started feeling compressed, anxiety gripping me from the inside, and sighed. I opened my eyes to see Keir staring at me with worry, and I forced a smile. “Remember how I said we should go to the market?” She nodded with wide eyes. My smile widened slightly. “Let’s go today. We can ask someone about your magic sensing abilities, and see how Solin is around other dragons. How about it?” She grinned, nodding eagerly. “Let’s go!” ----- It was fairly easy to find a market, but less easy to get Solin there. He’s a little too heavy for Keir, but he squirms less in her arms than in mine. We made slow progress, and I had us land as soon as I saw a faint path. I asked a passing Spiral for directions, and she cheerfully pointed us down the path in the direction of the market. I could tell that Keir was glad to be walking – Solin wasn’t quite talking yet, but he was strong and seemed to enjoy running around by our feet. When we got closer, we could see the small market’s covered stalls and more dragons. Keir looked at me, placing a hand on my arm nervously. “Lan,” she whispered, “I, um …” I looked at her, raising an eyebrow before leading her off to the side of the path to let other dragons move past us. Keir fidgeted for a moment before finally speaking up. “Well … I mean … I’ve never been anywhere like this …” I grinned, suddenly understanding her insecurity. “You’ll be fine,” I said, “it’s just a place to buy and sell items with treasure. I’m not going to leave you on your own. Try to enjoy, alright?” Keir nodded and seemed to be reassured, so I led her into the market, dodging the occasional dragon. I had a feeling that if she were small again, she’d be hiding behind my leg, but as it was she held onto Solin with one arm and had her other hand gripping my arm lightly. I looked around, taking in the different stalls, before heading towards one with an old, shimmering ivory Pearlcatcher, female by the number of horns. She clutched her pearl in one claw and sorted scrolls with another, looking up when we approached. “Hello, dears,” she said, looking down her nose a little at us, “what may I help you with?” Keir shied away, but I gave her a small push forward to encourage her. She glared at me, but I smiled at her and then at the Pearlcatcher. “Hello,” I began, “we’re in need of some advice about Keir’s magical abilities.” “Is that you, dear?” The Pearlcatcher asked, looking at Keir. Keir nodded, and the Pearlcatcher smiled. “Tell me what’s bothering you. I’m no magic specialist, but I’ve been around for a while.” I nodded encouragingly to Keir, and she began slowly, glancing down to make sure Solin was still at our feet. The Storm Seeker and sparrowmouse hopped off of us to make sure Solin was entertained. “Well … I can, um … Sense electricity from Lan and Solin,” she looked at us each in turn, “and I could sense Solin’s egg when we found it … and this egg … feels bright.” She murmured the last bit, glancing down at the Light egg in her arms. “So do you.” The old Pearlcatcher laughed. “It is because we are Light dragons, young one. I have heard many cases similar. There is no need to worry – you are simply sensing magic. Do you sense anything different between this young Skydancer and this hatchling?” Keir cocked her head. “Yes. I can sense a lot more electricity from Lan than from Solin.” “I see …” The Pearlcatcher said, “then you are also sensing quantity of magic. I have heard that sometimes this ability changes with age. You are still but a hatchling.” The Pearlcatcher gave us a smile before turning her attention back to her stall. “Now, would you like to buy anything?” ----- I ended up buying a Battered Book of Fables as thanks, and Keir looked at it with interest. It’d be good if I could teach her how to read. Shortly thereafter, I bought Keir and Solin some pieces of honeycomb and led them to a small resting area. I asked Keir for her Blue Quartz, and then went off to find a jeweler. We didn't have much treasure, but after selling some bits and bobs we'd picked up, I could just afford what I wanted. A short while later, I found Keir and Solin again and presented Keir with a wrapped package. She opened it eagerly and gasped at the fillet instead. “This … this is for me?” I grinned. “Sure is. I thought it’d be better to wear your Blue Quartz instead of carrying it around. Want help putting it on?” Keir nodded happily, and I carefully slipped the fillet over her head feathers and fished out a reflective bit of crystal we had found earlier – it was a shiny piece of junk, really, but it made for a nice makeshift mirror. “Like it?” A smile spread across Keir’s face, and she nodded. “I love it. Solin, look - … Solin?” Oh no. I turned and looked around. Solin was nowhere to be seen. Suddenly, a loud cry came from the marketplace, and Keir and I exchanged glances before running towards it, our familiars flying behind us. We ran up to see some other dragons forming a loose circle around Solin. He was growling and slashing or biting at any dragon who tried to get closer. “Man, an angry Tundra,” a Ridgeback said on my left, “weird. And what idiot let him wander around?” “This one,” I growled, signaling for Keir to stay back before pushing through the dragons and stopping in front of Solin. He tried to bite me, but I was used to his attacks and pulled my arm away before he could grab it. “Hey Solin,” I said, and he just whirled around … but didn’t stop when he was facing me. He kept looking around in my direction and looked extremely agitated. I frowned. Were all the dragons confusing him? I suddenly spread my wings, blocking out as much of the crowd as possible. He finally focused on me and seemed to sniff, and then his agitated expression wavered. “It’s me, Lan,” I said, trying to emulate Keir’s soothing tone, “I know you don’t like me as much as you like Keir, but you gotta trust that I’m not going to hurt you. Okay?” I held a hand out to the hatchling and he bit it – but gently. Solin let me lift him up and hold him as I walked through the crowd quickly. I could feel the stares of other dragons on me, and I caught Keir’s eye before heading out of the market. Once a fair distance away and in another ruin, we set our things down and sat around a small fire, Solin sleeping curled up between us. “What happened?” Keir asked. I shook my head. “I’m not sure. It seemed like Solin didn’t know where he was – or where I was. I guess we’ll have to wait until he’s old enough to explain what’s going on.” Keir nodded, and then squeaked. I looked at her, and she looked at the Light egg. Oh no. “Er,” she said, “I think it moved …” Great.
