These small, brightly coloured birds are endemic to the island of Java in Indonesia. They are sedentary, inhabiting slow-moving or rocky rivers and streams flowing through forest - usually humid evergreen, but also mangroves and mixed forest - and live at elevations up to 1,500m. They primarily prey upon fish, but will also eat crustaceans, small reptiles and insects. Their breeding season has been observed to be between March and April.
These birds are shy, and their remote habitat makes them hard to observe in the wild, but they are suspected to be undergoing a decline in population due primarily to loss of habitat. Human populations have put intense pressure on the wildlife of Java as urban, industrial and agricultural development have greatly reduced forest cover, especially in the lowlands which the blue-banded kingfisher prefers. Development and uncontrolled fires are a continued threat even in protected areas.

The Roatan coral snake is a little-studied, somewhat obscure species of coral snake (Family Elapidae) endemic to the western side of Isla Roatán in Honduras. They are red and black in colour with striking bands across the length of their body - likely to warn other animals of their venomous bite. They are a terrestrial, semi-fossorial species which inhabits Caribbean hardwood forests, and doesn't adapt well to developed areas. They are the only venomous species of snake found on the island.
Their small range (and presumably small population) puts this species at severe risk of extinction, especially as the wild areas of the island they live on continue to be developed for agricultural, residential and recreational use. Logging and tourism contribute further to habitat loss. It's also likely the snake is persecuted by inhabitants of the island due to being venomous and potentially dangerous, despite there being no records of bites on Isla Roatán.

The spotted handfish is a small, rare species of anglerfish endemic to the estuary of Derwent River in Tasmania. Its fins are modified for "walking" on the sea floor, where the fish spends most of its time; their resemblance to human hands earned them their name. They prey upon small shellfish, shrimps and polychaete worms. Females reach sexual maturity around 2 - 3 years and lay up to 200 eggs, which she guards until hatching.
One of the greatest threats to the spotted handfish is the invasive species Asterias amurensis, the North Pacific seastar, which feeds on both fish eggs and ascidians which the handfish uses to attach its eggs. Introduced crabs also pose a risk to the species. Fortunately, active conservation efforts are in place, such as artificial sticks which the handfish can use to attach their eggs. Though the species is still at risk, their population (for now) seems stable.

The Desertas wolf spider is endemic to the Deserta Grande island of the Madeira Archipelago, in Portugal. They are one of the largest species of wolf spider in the world - females can have a leg span measuring 12 cm - and are also one of the most endangered. They inhabit only a single remote valley on their native island, the Vale de Castanheira. These spiders spend their time hidden under rocks or crevices: whenever they're not hunting their smaller relatives, insects and even small lizards.
The species is at risk due to human-caused changes to their environment, particularly the introduction of non-native goats and rabbits and, even more devastating to the spiders' small home, the invasive plant Phalaris aquatica - which dominates the natural landscape and prevents the spiders from finding suitable shelter. Conservation efforts are now in place: for example, Bristol Zoo started a captive breeding project in 2016 with plans to release captive-bred spiders back into the wild, in areas where the invasive plant has been removed.
