Welcome to the Ringwyrm Subspecies Hub!
Ringwyrms are the descendants of heretic scholars from the Light Flight who sought to tame Shade energy. Each believed the world's truths might be clarified through this communion, but the roles of researcher and subject became blurred. Whatever fate ultimately befell them has been lost, stricken from history. Many thought it best the Scholars remain buried with the knowledge they wished to unearth, both for Sornieth and for the outcast remnants of their line...
But Sornieth is changing. Entire ancient forests have been decimated by natural disasters related to the newly discovered leylines, the boundaries between wyrm and hydra are no longer assured, and the pounding fever of war drums heralds the arrival of invading nations eager to - renegotiate territory. In this chaos, Ringwyrms must again decide how they will shape history: fight, flight, or a choice in between?
A thick tallow candle to read creepy stories by. Let's hope it doesn't blow out.

Ringwyrms are a nocturnal, subterranean species of spiral and bogsneak that lairs in cemeteries. They are opportunistic vampires who are not above occasionally latching onto larger breeds for a snack! Some have moist, slimy skin like earthworms and others soft scales like skinks. Like a tree's rings, a Ringwyrm's horns indicate the individual's age and health.

Variants

Deep Earth (Clay Secondary) - Deeps have a knack for sculpting, especially with clay. They are the most sensitive to vibrations and predict weather and groundwater locations by reading the anticipatory trembling of root systems. Deeps work with Loams to establish larger fungal networks for information, and with Decays to fossilize bones for added structural integrity.

Decay (Sable) - Decays can sense the first stirrings of disease in flesh and, depending on the individual, either correct or exploit them. They break down bone with their saliva like komodos, which they use to develop nutrient pastes with Loams. Decays work closely with Deeps to balance their home's energy for the best grounding experiences.

Loam (Umber) - Loams are most commonly sighted on the surface after nightly rains. They have the best camouflage and are excellent tree wardens, often peppering the earth with seeds so cemeteries experience a curious explosion of growth following a storm. Loams work closely with Deeps to ensure the integrity of nurseries and gardens, and with Decays to fertilize their plots.

Much reviled, especially by Earth for their apparent disregard for the dead, Ringwyrm clans are clandestine by necessity. Where there is war, however, they descend like wild dogs upon the field's fallen. Many a rattled scout has regaled his comrades with tales of the "ravenous earth" and its "maggots...barely more than ascendant beasts." In recent years, however, others have defended them:
"I'd be mad too if you were stompin' all over my roof killin' n' quarrelin' like a bunch a' cats in heat! I say, y'all get what you deserve from those wyrms. Good riddance to ye."
Whatever their intent, it is not wise to tempt fate after dark. Nevertheless, many have sought the services of Ringwyrm apothecaries and tree wardens, who have their own vibration-based language that is difficult to learn. While they can speak common, it is with an eerie, tremulant sibilance. Coatl have had the most success forging temporary alliances.
Familiars
Ringwyrms bond more readily with creatural familiars than sentient ones, and form alliances with more Beastclans than dragon. While Tunnel Hydras and Ringwyrms compete for resources, some have achieved a formidable peace. Other common companions include:
[item=Amaranth Moth] [item=Animated Statue] [item=Anomalous Nekomata] [item=Autumn Millifae] [item=Black Dwarf Unicorn] [item=Creeping Tendril] [item=Crowned Bonepriest] [item=Fungalhoof Qiriq] [item=Fungi Sage] [item=Glamourtail Hopper] [item=Goliath Mountain Beetle] [item=Highreach Bonepicker] [item=Kelpie] [item=Peacevine Aardvark] [item=Silky Mole] [item=Tender Larail] [item=Transmuted Treasure] [item=Trick of the Light] [item=White Rot Deer] [item=Wildwood Owl]
Fashion
Preferred adornments include bones, leaves, and feathers, but some Ringwyrms have been observed wearing wraps made from scavenged material. Of particular interest is the use of blindfolds among individuals who are not blind. Whether they protect the nocturnal wyrms' eyesight or have some other, ceremonial significance is unknown.
Tokens
Despite their macabre associations, Ringwyrms keep flourishing territories that can expand for miles underground to connect with sister clans, which band together to defend from hydras. The presence of a Ringwyrm shrine, identified by three tokens that symbolize the clan's truths, is a sure sign of infestation. Ahnu the Nightmare King of the first known clan reveres gems for their light-absorptive properties. Whether this is because light represents knowledge, or the subspecies' historic separation from Light Flight, is another unknown.

Familiars
Ringwyrms bond more readily with creatural familiars than sentient ones, and form alliances with more Beastclans than dragon. While Tunnel Hydras and Ringwyrms compete for resources, some have achieved a formidable peace. Other common companions include:
Amaranth Moth
Familiar
This distinctive moth has deep reds and purples running through its leafy wings. It's difficult to classify as purely flora or fauna.
1500
Animated Statue
Familiar
This peculiar statue wasn't standing there when you last looked, and it certainly wasn't posed in that way either. Don't turn your back. Don't look away.
1500
Anomalous Nekomata
Familiar
Nekomata sleep with their eye open. It's as disconcerting as it sounds.
1000
Autumn Millifae
Familiar
This shiny arthropod is a deft swimmer; it is quite a treat to see one swirling and twirling down a creek during the waning sunlight of autumn.
500
Black Dwarf Unicorn
Familiar
This dwarf unicorn has lost its magic. Its once shining coat is dull and blackened. The horns of black unicorns are worthless.
0
Creeping Tendril
Familiar
A shy violet that will only move when no one is watching. This is a perfectly normal thing to plant in a garden.
500
Crowned Bonepriest
Familiar
The bonepriest's crown grows an additional prong with each successful molt.
1950
Fungalhoof Qiriq
Familiar
These creatures leave a trail of vibrant fungi in their wake. Tracking a Fungalhoof Qiriq is easy; surviving an encounter with one is less so.
2300
Fungi Sage
Familiar
Known for its patience and wisdom, its anecdotes are only understood by other fungi.
2000
Glamourtail Hopper
Familiar
These diminutive fish live in shallow puddles. They will use their fins to propel them across short stretches of land.
0
Goliath Mountain Beetle
Familiar
Its long lifespan and natural armor allow this insect to reach enormous sizes. The largest recorded Goliath had a 7m wingspan!
2400
Highreach Bonepicker
Familiar
While primarily scavengers, Bonepickers will band together to finish off prey that's still got a little kick left!
2000
Kelpie
Familiar
Most dragons are too large to practically ride a kelpie, and as such are regarded as allies, not prey.
250
Peacevine Aardvark
Familiar
This aardvark is known for its strange ritual of hibernating above ground in the middle of spring, only to awaken again during autumn. It then spends a very productive winter below ground.
2060
Silky Mole
Familiar
It's really hard to keep your hair looking this good after digging around in the dirt all day. Show appreciation where it's due!
1000
Tender Larail
Familiar
Tender Larails will consume all parts of a plant except the seeds, which they carefully bury.
1000
Transmuted Treasure
Familiar
Those who say all that treasure will never keep you company are probably feelin' pretty silly right about now. It's you and your money, goin' it alone!
1500
Trick of the Light
Familiar
Did you see that? It looked like a fox! You didn't? Well, it was there a second ago...
2250
White Rot Deer
Familiar
After a season, wood ear deer enter a second stage of life. This veteran is an even more effective guardian.
2000
Wildwood Owl
Familiar
This owl's bite is worse than its bark.
1700

A: It's still there but no longer updated.
Q: Why isn't there a Plague, Earth, or Nature variant?
A: 'Cause I think Light looks best, lol. I sometimes breed them in other flights, though. Spoiler: that's why there's three Scholars!
Q: Do you take alternative forms of payment?
A: Yes, for treasure at a rate of 1:1000, and for easily liquidated items at LAH.
Q: Can I remove my hatchling's lore snippet from their bio?
A: Yes, but please include a link to the subspecies hub.
Q: What do "Buried" and "Entombed" mean?
A: Buried and Entombed Ringwyrms remained with their birth clan instead of striking out on their own, but they can still meet with your Ringwyrms in their lore.

Hi everyone! It has been a hot minute, hasn't it? You're being pinged for updates on the Ringwyrm Subspecies, who finally have a completed hub and lore! Brand-new information is sprinkled throughout the hub, but the "Social" section has the most. I hope you had a good holiday, and thanks for following the subspecies' development!
