It is said that they lure people off of safe paths by receding once they get close. There are several versions of the story, one where a man named Will leads a bad life and is denied at the gates of heaven, but the Devil gives him a single ember to keep him warm at night. While many reports come from the British Isles there have also been similar sightings in Australia and even as the Hitodama in Japanese folklore. The legends come from all over the world, the most famous black dog myth is the Beast of Dartmoor, which is featured in Arthur Conan Doyle's [i]The Hound of The Baskervilles[/i]. Many reports come from the British Isles and the dogs universally signify death. The legends reach from France, to England, and even to Connecticut. The black dog of the Hanging Hills is a relatively recent legend, it is said that the first meeting will bring joy, the second is a warning, and a third is a death omen. At least six deaths have been blamed on the black dog of the Hanging Hills.
