OTHER DRAGONS FOR SALE: @Dinology for Gallica? (sorry if I wasn't supposed to ping you. I took forever to write this one.) Lore Skydancer, midnight/midnight/spruce, 40kT
[columns] [nextcol]
Gallica The Defender
[nextcol]

[/columns] Gallica was the first of her nest to hatch, but she was smaller than her siblings for a long time. Despite her diminutive stature, she was a force to be reckoned with. She fiercely defended her siblings against hapless animals that wandered into the nest, but she also defended animals against each other. She would chase foxes away from rabbits, destroy the crows that ganged up on falcons in the sky, and if any dragon was being bullied (be it one of her siblings or a complete stranger) it took several adults to pull her off of the perpetrator. Her parents said she reminded them of a Guardian, but without the focus or foresight. They began teaching her to use argue effectively and strategically, so that she could pursue her protective urges without always ending up in fights. One of her brothers said she was like a tiny lawyer who could rip your throat out. Some dragons were a little scared of her, but they all knew she never started fights on her own, and that she would always help you out if you were at a disadvantage, regardless of who you were or what you’d done in the past. She spent a lot of time with her siblings, but also hung out with some of the smaller, weaker dragons and stopped them from getting picked on. When she was old enough to learn a trade, she immediately decided she wanted to be a warrior. She had visions of herself as a lone knight in shining armor on a neverending quest, protecting the weak, descending upon evildoers in a storm of blades, and flying away in a bright flash of armor in the sunlight. Her first few days of training, however, made that dream seem far out of reach. She was fast and great at grappling, and she was always strong when she had adrenaline in her system, but her muscles were surprisingly weak in practice when she didn’t have anyone to be angry at. She could barely lift the sword, and had to spend days just standing there, learning to hold it up and aim at a fixed point for long periods of time. Then she had to learn to carry a shield, and then to coordinate movements with sword, shield, and footwork; plus how to do all that and more in heavy armor. There were lots of boring drills, lots of stabbing at marks carved into trees, and far too much running on her feet when she thought flying should do just as well. Gallica felt weak and clumsy for the first time, and it annoyed her to no end. But she kept at it, and as she trained and built up her strength, she grew closer to the size of her other siblings. She also learned control. What her parents had been trying to teach her with arguing lessons in her youth, she somehow learned while training. By the time she was ready to be considered a true warrior, she could hold her tongue when she wanted, meticulously control her movements even in the heat of battle, and harness anger or calm at will for whatever purpose she needed. Gallica now works mostly as a solitary agent, traveling on her own until she finds an encounter in which she is needed for defense or protection. She’s slowly been training herself to sense when others are in danger in an ever-increasing radius around her. Often her searching takes her into a clan. She’s found that within clan territory, she’s mostly needed as a verbal defender of justice (as she would say, although her brother would just call her a lawyer); but she never fails to find instances where her skills as a warrior are required. Gallica walks and moves with deliberate pride. Some dragons think she is proud of fighting or of defending those who need it, but she only sees it as doing what she has to in order to exist and be who she is. She does take pride in her accomplishments, however; and never stops training and drilling her skills, whether she learned them yesterday or years ago. Zeph was always mixing things together and lighting them on fire. At first he was just haphazardly combining things hoping for a dramatic reaction, and his mother had to carefully curate the materials in her lab to make sure he couldn't stumble upon anything dangerous. But when Zeph was a little older, he started doing actual experiments. His mother taught him about the scientific method, and let him use some of her equipment. His father took him into the woods to collect samples of various plant and fungus secretions to investigate. It wasn't long before Zeph began going on expeditions of his own. One of his primary interests became searching for obscure knowledge of chemical phenomena and figuring out how and why the effects worked. He investigated old folk remedies, poison concoctions, unusual dyes, and strange natural reactions known in small tribes, villages, and beastclans; any group small and isolated enough that their knowledge had never made it into one of the books he'd read in his parents' lair. Unlike most of his family, Zeph never felt the need to confine himself to the forests or shadows, and he braved freezing icefields, treacherous mountains to get information and supplies. He had a substantial adventurous streak, and was known as somewhat of a daredevil among the other researchers with whom he conferred periodically. He sometimes went on expeditions for other researchers and returned with whatever they needed plus impressive accounts of his experiences --as well as quite a few notes and questions of his own. Zeph was idly flipping through his notebooks one day when he noticed one rumor he had never investigated. It regarded a plant secretion said to come from a variety of succulent specific to the deserts and steppes of a small region near Dragonhome. According to the accounts mentioned in his notes, the substance was normally edible and had mild healing properties, but became a deadly poison after it had been cooled to a certain temperature. Curiosity piqued, Zeph began a journey into the desert. For the first few weeks, his journey went well. He hadn't found the plant his was after yet, but he was enjoying the change of scenery. He had never been to a desert before, and the novelty combined with the challenge of everyday survival was keeping him entertained. He was just starting to get a feel for the landscape in terms of plant life and what kinds of areas were likely to be home to succulents. He had begun to search for the plant in earnest, walking at a slow pace and keeping his eves trained on the ground in front of him, when he heard a faint growling sound. He looked up and tilted his head. The growls seemed to be coming from all around him. He then caught a whiff of decaying flesh, which confused him based on what he knew of the region's sparse wildlife-- he didn't think the desert scavengers would allow a perfectly good corpse to go to waste. It was only when a pack of zombies became visible over the dunes that Zeph realized he was in quite a bit of trouble. He turned to flee in several different directions, but found himself surrounded by the undead. Grimacing, he shakily pulled his knife out of his belt and hoped for the best. He had started to reluctantly fight the first of the approaching zombies when he heard the other dragons. A small but well-organized group descended upon the undead hordes and wasted no time in driving them away. Zeph stared at the newcomers, impressed and a bit jealous of how calm and effective they were in the face of undead creatures. The dragons took him back to their clan and tended to the minor injuries he'd received in his brief encounter, liberally applying particular ointments to any wounds that looked like they'd been caused by zombies. He told them about his research, and the next day a scouting party took him to a small patch of his succulents of interest. The scouts, and the rest of the clan, liked him well though that he stayed with them for quite a while longer than he'd initially intended. They let him set up a laboratory in their lair, where he figured out the mechanisms involved with the succulent secretion and then started studying various chemistry questions related to the undead. He was impressed with the way the clan handled the relatively frequent zombie encounters, and wanted to contribute in some way even though his undead combat skills were severely lacking-- but first he had to investigate what allowed dead creatures to become animate in the first place. Magic was a good part of it, but it turned out that quite a bit of zombieism relied on chemical changes. Zeph discovered this after examining some undead flesh samples (which writhed unnervingly under the miscroscope) that the scouts were more than eager to bring back to his lab. Zeph's work in general now consists of a healthy mix of knowledge for its own sake and utility. His most recent challenge has been figuring out how to make a potion zombie-repellent without corroding any material it's applied to. He also works with plenty of other non-undead related things, synthesizing compounds and materials to make desert life a bit easier as well as uncovering the workings behind various things he's observed in desert flora and fauna, and of course collecting and investigating mysteries for curiosity's sake. He's fairly sure that his curiosity and wanderlust will take over someday and he'll wind up on a new journey, but for now he has plenty of work to do and things to learn in the desert. He spent a lot of time with his mother as a hatchling, learning about physics and electronics in her lab, but he was mostly interested in the theoretical background and the equations and proofs behind everything. It didn't take him long to begin studying mathematics. His siblings found him a bit confusing-- he played with them, but was very easily disengaged, and he didn't really come alive unless he was playing around with maths. His chemist brother Zephirus used equations when he needed to, but viewed them as more of a necessary evil. For Nothopanus, everything but equations seemed like a necessary bore. He knew the value of other dragons, however-- as much as he would have liked to be a loner, he wasn't always great at taking care of himself-- so when he noticed that his siblings or clanmates were starting to drift too far away he would do something to draw their attention, such as building an entertaining or useful machine. His studies sometimes led him to interesting and unforeseen discoveries that allowed him to have a few tricks up his sleeve. Often this was in the realm of physics or electronics, some seemingly strange but true equality that would allow him to produce lights and motion that seemed like they should't be possible. But occasionally he'd stumble across something that showed how physical energy was related to magic, and he'd be able to physically cast a spell (or at least mimic its effects) despite having no natural predisposition for magic. As much awe as this garnered from others, Nothopanus was only mildly interested in these applications, and soon went back to the equations in his mind and on his scrolls. After staying in his birth clan for a fairly long time, Nothopanus packed up his things and disappeared. He didn't tell anyone of his impending departure, although he didn't try to hide it either. It was as if he simply didn't know that it was standard procedure to inform others of such things, or he didn't know he was going away until he actually did, and it never crossed his mind that he or anyone else should care that he was leaving. Eventually he showed up in another clan, somehow securing a place to live, and settled there. He still dabbles regularly in things like engineering and even a bit of minor sorcery, but always returns to mathematics as his main focus, surprisingly eager to set aside diversions like robot-building in favor of his increasingly complicated proofs. Other dragons never seem to be able to pin down exactly where Nothopanus's loyalties lie or where his motivations come from. He's obviously uninterested in applied math, but he still applies it much of the time. He exhibits no personal preferences or loyalties, leading many dragons to assume he's driven by money. But while he will sometimes build things in return for money or favors, other times he can't be bothered with payment or bribery. Some of his proofs and findings are eagerly shared with anyone with enough math knowledge to understand them, but others are hoarded and kept as secret as a private diary. To most other dragons, his chaotic behavior seems at odds with the ordered, structured nature of his work-- although some see it as an inevitability caused by a requisite balance of order and chaos, or perhaps his behavior follows such a complex pattern that it is virtually indistinguishable from chaos itself. Regardless, nobody can deny that he is a mathematical genius, and Nothopanus continues to solve incredible and complex problems while he baffles others and follows his own inexplicable whims.

Note 1: I tried to avoid the word "math(s)" as much as possible, but I think it snuck in there a few times, so feel free to change it to whatever it is in your dialect!

Note 2: I was going to call him "Notho" as a nickname, but then I thought he didn't seem like the nicknamey type. Feel free to give him a nickname if you want though, since his name is long.

@HinodeTsurugi Sure!
(I put you on a general pinglist, which would include pairs I haven't made cards for yet. Is that ok or would you rather be on all the individual pinglists?)

@corgzi Added you!
I can put one (or both) of those pairs on a nest right now if you have a preference! I just put Forest Protectors on a nest. I forgot Lichen Trunks still has one more day.
