Since the addition of the Flight Sales forums, to be exact. You've grown and changed as a community and it's time we make some adjustments! The following changes are the product of multiple factors: your feedback, your needs, our observations, and the data we've collected over the years. [br][br] Flight Dominance Forums We're excited to give you a forum board dedicated to Dominance discussions, sales, and coordination. Effective immediately, the volunteer moderators will start moving over the larger and/or community-run Dominance threads. To make things easier for the moderators, we ask if you are running your own smaller Dominance thread, please remake your thread in the Dominance forum. We understand there may be concerns about newer players not knowing about your Dominance efforts, or in some cases not knowing the new board exists. For that reason, each Flight discussion forum may have one stickied hub in their general discussion Flight board that redirects players to the Dominance board. [br] Quests & Challenges Do you have a Coliseum challenge? A breeding challenge? A personal quest? This is the forum for you! Quests & Challenges can also be used for player-run Flight Festival games and events! This means you can have your celebration hub in the Flight Rising Discussion forum and then all of your festival games (except raffles/giveaways) in this forum! Please note: Personal quests must be open to discussion with other players. If they are not, they may be removed as spam. [br] Auctions * New as of 09:49 02/17/2017 Based on your constructive (and almost universal!) feedback on the initial Raffles forum change, we've added one more forum. Player-run auctions now have their own forum! All non-Flight specific auctions should go here. [br] "Dragons Wanted" is now "Find A Dragon" After a review and discussion, we concluded that the name “Dragons Wanted” no longer adequately described our goal for the board. This forum board is meant to be the place for you to engage with your fellow players to seek the perfect dragon for your breeding plans. "Dragons Wanted" implied this was the forum you could go to and ask for any random dragon, or just free dragons in general. That’s not what we wanted, and it started to overrun the board. We expect this name change to cut down or prevent that behavior. [br] "Raffles" is now "Raffles[s], Auctions,[/s] & Giveaways" This one is fairly straight forward. We adjusted the title to better reflect the content of the forum. All non-Flight specific forum-run raffles, giveaways[s], and auctions (both dragon or items or both[/s]) go here. Update: Raffles & Giveaways is now located under 'Flight Rising' on our forum index. [br][br] General Discussion Until now, the General Discussion forum has existed as a kind of "catch-all" for off-topic discussion. After review of the forum, which includes its moderation history and overall community traffic, we’ve come to the conclusion the General Discussion forum can no longer operate in that manner. To make the browsing experience easier on players and or volunteer moderator team, we believe tailoring General Discussion to be a bit more defined is a good step. Effective immediately, this forum will be for players to discuss their favorite non-Flight Rising games, shows, movies, music, and hobbies. Topics discussing common experiences like finals, projects, and shared languages are also okay. This is subject to change and we reserve the right to remove any threads or posts that overall go against the spirit of the board's goals. Please note: There are a handful of threads in this forum that will be grandfathered in due to popularity or overall quality of the discussion. Our forums are not the appropriate place for personal journals, religious debate, political debate, fundraising, advertising, counseling, medical advice, discussions of a highly personal nature, and polls that collect names, age, sex, or location. We understand this change may not be popular with everyone; however, Flight Rising is a browser game and we feel that our forums should reflect this. [br][br] Forum Auctions We wanted to take a moment to recognize a forum activity that's been common, but never really officially structured: Forum Auctions. For those that don't know, these are threads created for the purposes of auctioning off items, dragons, or in almost all cases: both. Player-run forum auctions have--for the most part--worked out due to the good faith nature of the Flight Rising community, but there have been some exceptions. When an auction doesn't go well, things can quickly get confusing, feel insincere, or (in the worst case) outright upsetting. None of this changes the fact that forum auctions are popular with the community, and this is something we appreciate and encourage. When they go well, they're fun and exciting! In December 2016, the Dragons for Sale forum saw an average of five to six new auctions posted daily! To that end, we wanted to outline and endorse a set of forum auction guidelines to best protect yourself as either the auctioneer or the buyer. Recommended Forum Auction Guidelines The following is our official recommendation. No one will receive a forum or account penalty if they choose a different way to run their auction. To start, we highly recommend players make use of the Crossroads for their auctions. This has several benefits. By using the Crossroads, the auctioneer will be able to see the currency (or item) being submitted as a bid. Inversely, it means the bidding player is not and will not be out any currency (or item) unless the trade is fully completed. The swap is secure and assured. Utilizing the Crossroads means that both parties are safely using a supported feature that is visible to all parties as well as the Flight Rising staff. Simply put: it is not possible to exploit bidders using the Crossroads; the goods will need to exist in the trade in order for it to complete successfully and payment to be taken. The crossroads allows for the option of a silent auction. If the auction is run silently through the Crossroads only, the auctioneer is able to reject any bid from a player they do not wish to do business with (simply cancel the trade). Crossroads does not pull items from the Vault, and only sends items or currency that a player currently has actively available in the Hoard. If someone is attempting to gain currency or items through a bad faith auction, the Crossroads trade will fail and the bidding player or the auctioneer will not be out any funds or items.[br][br]
The Bidder

Initiate a Crossroads trade with the player running the auction.
Enter your bid, specify in the trade details chat what you're bidding on, and send the trade notification.
You can cancel your bid at any time.
If you wish to change your bid, cancel the trade and create a new one.
If you win, you will confirm the trade once the auctioneer has added the auction prize(s) to the trade.
[br] The Auctioneer

After you post your thread with the starting bid, brace yourself for incoming Crossroads trades.
Update your thread, and/or communicate with your bidders via the trade details chat when the bid increases.
Complete the trade with the winning player using their Crossroads trade with their current bid.
[br] 'Silent' Auctions For player-run auctions on Flight Rising, silent auctions are ones where bidding is done solely through Crossroads.

Bidders subscribe to the thread but do not post indicating their participation, or at the very least, their bids.
The auctioneer updates the thread with the current high bid.
Bidders cancel and submit new trades accordingly if they wish to remain in the running.
The auctioneer eventually announces the winner, accepts the winning trade, and cancels all others.
This method fully allows bidding player privacy. It also provides protection for the auctioneer. If you do not wish to do business with another player, simply reject the trade. While we consider it a courtesy to politely notify the other player you do not wish to do business with them, it is not mandatory.
For easy reference, we have created an Encyclopedia page covering these guidelines. We strongly encourage any player bidding on an auction to insist on the above guidelines. [br][br][br]The Weekly Q&A The Weekly Q&A has become more of a bi-weekly event. The Weekly Q&A is a team effort and answering your questions often requires input from more than one developer on the team. Recent delays have been largely due to work on the revamped Auction House and Coliseum, preparation for the projects after their completion and release, and other new content. To address the community's feedback about the frequency and content of the answers, the Weekly Q&A will be changing to a bi-weekly schedule and renamed Ask the Team! Additionally, the Weekly Q&A is just not the right format to answer in-depth questions focused on upcoming features. Ask the Team! will focus on shorter questions about existing content and features. Questions about development or engineering will be documented and, if possible, addressed in a future installment of Words on the Wind, which we feel is a great place to have deeper, more meaningful discussions regarding the ongoing development of Flight Rising. Speaking of Words on the Wind: We're wrapping up work on the Auction House revamp and Coliseum revamp, so these two features have commanded much of our team's attention. That being said, we hope to get another issue out to you soon! Remember that Words on the Wind relies heavily on developer input, and almost everyone on the team has some buy-in to its creation; this can delay its release, depending on priorities, but we remain dedicated to keeping you as informed as frequently as we can. Stay tuned! [br][br] ----- [br][br] Dragon Share Theme Week [br] What is "Theme Week?" Dragon Share Theme Week is a weekly event in our Dragon Share forum. The theme changes every Monday, stickied in the Dragon Share forum, and the new theme is typically announced in our Site Status box on the front page. [br] Is it a contest? Are there prizes? To put it simply, no. Theme Week is designed to be a low-pressure event for players to show off their dragons with other like-minded players. We do have a spotlight for each week, announced in the companion discussion thread for the current theme. Spotlights are random. As long as the shared dragons fit the theme and don't exceed that week's maximum number of dragons, a player is eligible for the spotlight! Theme Weeks are meant to be lighthearted fun. They are not a part of our development cycle, with the sole exception of themes complementing a release (such as The Bogsneak Mutagen) and monthly elemental Festivals. [br] But half my Lair fits the theme! Choose wisely. Besides, you never know when a particular theme will roll back around! [br] Next Generation Players were tasked with putting together the next generation of craftsdragons and builders from their Lair: [br]

One (1) dragon skilled with plants and herbs, to both feed and heal the new Clan.
One (1) dragon with a mastery of design and masonry to build and grow. These events are characterized by a “hub” posted in the Flight Rising Discussion forum. Here players share and celebrate their Flight with their fellow players and provide a digest of links and mini-events happening around the site. Our November Community Update covered the 2016-2017 Brightshine Jubilee through Flameforger's Festival. Today we’ll cover the 2016-2017 Starfall Celebration, Riot of Rot, and Rockbreaker's Ceremony! Given the depth and breadth of the events, it’s not always possible to recap every mini-event held. Please take the time to check out each hub to see everything Arcane, Plague, and Earth had to offer their fellow players this year! What's Changed?
  • New: Flight Dominance forums
  • New: Quests & Challenges
  • New: Auctions! *
  • Changed: Dragons Wanted
  • Changed: Raffles
  • Changed: General Discussion

It's been a couple years since we last updated the forums. Since the addition of the Flight Sales forums, to be exact. You've grown and changed as a community and it's time we make some adjustments!

The following changes are the product of multiple factors: your feedback, your needs, our observations, and the data we've collected over the years.

Flight Dominance Forums
We're excited to give you a forum board dedicated to Dominance discussions, sales, and coordination.

Quests & Challenges
Do you have a Coliseum challenge? A breeding challenge? A personal quest? This is the forum for you!

Quests & Challenges can also be used for player-run Flight Festival games and events! This means you can have your celebration hub in the Flight Rising Discussion forum and then all of your festival games (except raffles/giveaways) in this forum!

Please note: Personal quests must be open to discussion with other players. If they are not, they may be removed as spam.

Auctions *
New as of 09:49 02/17/2017
Based on your constructive (and almost universal!) feedback on the initial Raffles forum change, we've added one more forum. Player-run auctions now have their own forum! All non-Flight specific auctions should go here.

"Dragons Wanted" is now "Find A Dragon"
After a review and discussion, we concluded that the name “Dragons Wanted” no longer adequately described our goal for the board.

"Raffles" is now "Raffles, Auctions, & Giveaways"
This one is fairly straight forward. We adjusted the title to better reflect the content of the forum. All non-Flight specific forum-run raffles, giveaways, and auctions (both dragon or items or both) go here.

Update: Raffles & Giveaways is now located under 'Flight Rising' on our forum index.

General Discussion
Until now, the General Discussion forum has existed as a kind of "catch-all" for off-topic discussion.

Forum Auctions
We wanted to take a moment to recognize a forum activity that's been common, but never really officially structured: Forum Auctions.

Recommended Forum Auction Guidelines
The following is our official recommendation.

If someone is attempting to gain currency or items through a bad faith auction, the Crossroads trade will fail and the bidding player or the auctioneer will not be out any funds or items.

The Bidder
  1. Initiate a Crossroads trade with the player running the auction.
  2. Enter your bid, specify in the trade details chat what you're bidding on, and send the trade notification.
  3. You can cancel your bid at any time.
  4. If you wish to change your bid, cancel the trade and create a new one.
  5. If you win, you will confirm the trade once the auctioneer has added the auction prize(s) to the trade.

The Auctioneer
  1. After you post your thread with the starting bid, brace yourself for incoming Crossroads trades.
  2. Update your thread, and/or communicate with your bidders via the trade details chat when the bid increases.
  3. Complete the trade with the winning player using their Crossroads trade with their current bid.

'Silent' Auctions
For player-run auctions on Flight Rising, silent auctions are ones where bidding is done solely through Crossroads.
  1. Bidders subscribe to the thread but do not post indicating their participation, or at the very least, their bids.
  2. The auctioneer updates the thread with the current high bid.
  3. Bidders cancel and submit new trades accordingly if they wish to remain in the running.

The Weekly Q&A
The Weekly Q&A has become more of a bi-weekly event.

Stay tuned!

Dragon Share Theme Week

What is "Theme Week?"
Dragon Share Theme Week is a weekly event in our Dragon Share forum. The theme changes every Monday, stickied in the Dragon Share forum, and the new theme is typically announced in our Site Status box on the front page.

Is it a contest?

But half my Lair fits the theme!
Choose wisely. Besides, you never know when a particular theme will roll back around!

Next Generation
Players were tasked with putting together the next generation of craftsdragons and builders from their Lair:

Night of the Nocturne: Invasion!
For Night of the Nocturne we had a special two-week event where players had to select two dragons from their Lair to seek out the invading Imposter and their companion Mimic. If you enjoy reading player lore, you're definitely going to want to take a look at this theme event!

Flight Festival Recap 2016-2017
For those new to Flight Rising, back when we first opened the community created the tradition of celebrating a Flight’s holiday by putting on a site-wide organized event.

  • [Starfall] Make Your Own Baldwin Recipe
What better time to start inventing new recipes than a couple days before the world ends? A daily item will be posted by one of the event organizers. Each participant will then decide what other items or goop would make the daily item! It’s your turn to shine as the next generation’s Baldwin!

Good update, but I really don't like auctions being lumped in with raffles & giveaways :( Whoo! An Auctions forum! Thanks, admins.

The proposed auction guidelines are also not something I'd use, because it's impossible for bidders to know if they are outbid unless the auctioneer is online and actively monitoring everything. It'll make everything more slow-moving and frustrating.

But, yay! Dominance forums! Personal quests! Those are good additions.
