Lost Daughter

Nanna Ragnardóttir
|| Thief/Assassin/Shieldmaiden ||
Sometimes dragons build walls not to keep others out, but to see who cares enough to knock them down.
United we stand, United we conquer.

Cruel and cold like winds on the sea
Will you ever return to me?
Hear my voice, sing with the tide
My love will never die
Over waves and deep in the blue
I will give up my heart for you
Ten long years, I’ll wait to go by
My love will never die

Come, my love be one with the sea
Rule with me for eternity
Drown all dreams so mercilessly
And leave their souls to me
Play the song you sang long ago
And wherever the storm may blow
You will find the key to my heart
We’ll never be apart
Wild and strong you can’t be contained
Never bound nor ever chained
Wounds you caused will never mend
And you will never end

Cruel and cold like winds on the sea
Will you ever return to me
Hear my voice sing with the tide
Our love will never die

Quirks: Mischievous, Loyal

Personality: Nanna is a playful young dragoness who takes no scuff from anyone, she is quick to defend those closest to her and quick to offer comfort. her loyalty is unquestionable once it's earned and she is hardly ever without a sassy or sarcastic remark although her words seem to hold less sting when aimed at a friend. Nanna is unsure of herself at times and will often pull away from everyone when she is at war with herself, usually very guarded about things she perceives as weakness. Nanna doesn't often allow anyone to see her break down, so used to hiding such things she often hides when something becomes too much; to the friends she had made she was the strong one who never crumbled. Nanna's uncertainty is often based on what situation she finds herself in, and on of a subtle hand in needed or a sword, her wavering doesn't last long usually and she'll smile and start making jokes about anything.
she enjoys spending time with her friends and will often go out of her way to make them laugh. although her trust is not easily earned and she seems ready to cut ties to another dragon at any time should they prove she can trust them, Nanna often wanders outside at night, enjoying the mood and the pace. her unwavering loyalty to those who earn her trust makes her a valued ally in any situation while her reactions can differ from rowdy to sweet and comforting depending on the situation and who she's with at the time. her devotion to protecting her friends and loved ones makes her a dangerous opponent while her devotion and loyalty to her mate, while not obvious to others is unquestionable.

Background: Nanna grew up the daughter of a Viking Lord, Ragnar, and a Siren, Lorelei, second eldest child of the pair she followed her father as much as he would allow, he named her, Nanna, when she hatched and allowed her to follow him on land and even took her out on a small boat many times. she loved the sea, Nanna loved sailing and often watched the sea with her mother while they were on land. she learned what she was and what she could be, powerful and alluring, Nanna, like her sisters and mother could lure many a male to her, but she had no interest in becoming a Mermaid, Nymph, or powerful Siren, she wanted to sail and learn to fight as her father and brothers did. she did learn many soft melodies from her mother and many a bolder tune from her father and often hummed or sung in private as she was not confidant in her singing yet nor did she want to ensnare the unwary, she found an interest in the rough housing her brothers who still sailed with her father and learned sword fighting from them by watching and then when they offered to teach her by actually handling a sword.
Ragnar watched his young daughter and offered to teach her after her brothers had become captains or gone on to other ships with their older siblings. Nanna jumped at the opportunity, although in the beginning she would be more bruised than she was willing to admit, her stubborn nature kept her practicing with her father until she had the hang of sword use. Lorelei often watched her daughter with a mix of amusement and affection as the young dragoness wanted to be a warrior, but the sea's calling to her was strong and the elder dragoness often wondered which would win in the end Nanna's desire to be a warrior or the sea's gentle calling. in the end Nanna learned fighting and how to be a myth, she could be a lover or a warrior, the gentle sway of her hips hiding the power behind her blows although her call would never be as strong as her mother's and she would never ensnare drakes as easily although with practice if she chose to ensnare a male she could with ease.

Nanna was young when the assassin guild took her in, her parents had docked the ship and the young hatchling had been running errands for them trying to buy some supplies they would need on the ship before setting sail again. when a group of large drakes cornered her she, unarmed, stood no chance of winning against them and was dragged off to a assassin's guild and kept her in a lush room until the ship and her family had left the harbor without her. Nanna became quiet, hardly speaking to anyone except when she absolutely had to, she missed the sea, she missed her Papa and her Mama, she wanted to go back to her father's ship until she could manage to find her own place, but she never would. the guild master saw this change and tried to help the little dragoness, he was a kind older drake who hadn't approved of kidnapping, but he couldn't turn her away now that she was alone, he had found out too late who her parents were and for that he felt bad. Nanna had started singing again, a haunting melody she had often heard her mother sing, it was a sad song and she often heard dragons gather outside her door to listen to her song, she didn't know one of them was the guild master.
The guild master, Rell, took her into his care and raised her, prizing the little dragoness for her sweet, haunting, gentle singing and showing off her talent to rivals and allies alike. Nanna practiced her singing and learned how to be a thief and eventually a assassin although untried in the field others commented that she moved silent as a ghost. The guild master eventually began dressing her up in dark silks with small beads dangling from them which she wore for show in front of guests and while she sang, the silks were said to make her glitter prettier than gold by those who saw her and the compliments made her confidence grow. Rell named her Rose Logr varði-lokur(Seasong) although she kept her real name she began going by her new one as it seemed to fit the thief she had become better than her real name, the siren and sea farer's name, she tried to become what she had to be since the guild master was kind to her and enjoyed showing her off to his supposed allies. Rose slowly began pushing her memories away so she wouldn't drop her mask and her façade around the dragons she was living with, many of whom would have taken any weakness and exploited it to their advantage no matter who they were walking over.

Rose was reluctant to trust most in her 'home' as she knew what they were and what they had trained her to be. her trust for a few was absolute and she thought nothing of the daily going ons until she was told she would go on a job, simple theft, and given details. the job ended with three wounded by a 'Shadow Demon' and Rose started being trained to hone her skills better although she had achieved her objective. Rell realized she had no field experience and while he would have liked to keep his young charge with him if he wanted another thief, one possibly better than any he had seen, Rose needed the experience to get better and needed to practice. as she gained her skill Rose began hearing everything that the others in the guild were saying and her doubts started growing.
Rell continued having her dance and sing for his gatherings although she was reluctant to do so, the older male had never seemed to do this for more than showing her off. Rose was an adolescent and although she enjoyed the looks and found the obvious lust from some of the males amusing she didn't tolerate being man handled by anyone and after the first couple times Rell had started warning his guests to keep their claws to themselves or risk loosing them. Rose still felt the pull of the sea strongly and wondered if she'd get to sail again, she remembered sneaking onto her father's ship when she was small and how he'd shake his head and chuckle at her before allowing her to come help on deck.

The little dragoness was soon the best thief in the guild and could easily turn into a great assassin if she trained hard, she however didn't want to kill anyone just because it was a job. if she would kill someone it would be for a better reason than a few coin to line the guild's coffers; theft was one thing, accepting treasure for ending a life for coin or gem was something different. Rose kept her complaints to herself and trained as she was told to, learning to push her emotions aside and do what was needed. she continued taking jobs, often working with other thieves she got along well with or alone as was her preferred method.
Rose had stayed away from the sea as it sent a pang of longing through her and made her sad, but never complained when a job took her near the cost. in a way she hoped her parents would find her although it was a hope she never admit to as it seemed silly and very unlikely, but still for awhile she hoped until even that stopped. she took jobs and came back with her pay to present to the guild master with little emotion other than boredom if she even showed that, she avoided most of the others within the guild as a matter of principal, they were there by choice and she was not.

Rose was soon in a difficult position when the old guild master was killed and replaced by a younger, stronger dragon, and he implemented changes to the guild and out right eliminated rivals and those who opposed or disagreed with him. Rose thought about just leaving the guild and running, but knew if she did she would never be able to stop running for fear of being found again and killed. suddenly she was not a favored trinket used to impress allies or ensnare enemies into making a mistake and she found herself treated poorly by the new higher ranking dragons in the guild, she felt the old urge to grab her sword and cut down those who opposed her well up and she forced it back, she was out numbered and couldn't afford to be seen as a potential enemy as of yet.
Rose took the jobs given to her and kept out of sight, planning to get away from the guild and hopefully somewhere she could disappear, maybe even find a ship to work on. she became someone she didn't recognize although it helped her survive better than staying the same, she felt disgust at those around her for making the guild something unrecognizable and at herself for feeling forced to change to meet whatever would happen next. she planned to leave, but knew just telling the new guild master she was leaving wouldn't work well for her, so she planned to simply disappear.

She was given a job in a city, she decided to disappear within the city after all she could find a dragon that looked like her to take her place in prison and face the guild. the job was simple find her target, get rid of her target, go report in, her target never saw her nor did the city guard and the young dragoness who found the body only saw a shadow move. Rose smiled and made a report to the city guards, giving false information for a dragoness she had seen that shared similar enough colors and markings to her that it would fool whoever the guild sent after her. it was heartless yes, she wasn't proud of herself for doing it, but she was free and no one would come looking for her now that the guild had a body to kill and the target was dead, she could go anywhere and become anyone maybe even become Nanna again.
Rose left the city for a smaller village, near the cost, and made a life there for herself knowing she could never go back to the city she had spend her late hatchling years and young adolescent years in. she was content, not happy per say, but not unhappy by any means; she often flirted with the village males, sending them into fits when she sang and making them act like feral hounds. she found it amusing although none of them truly interested her and she had no real want of any of them although of the single males she could have had her pick, but she simply practiced with her unusual gift, and if the mood struck her for company she would often take her chosen target to a local tavern for food and conversation.

Rose met a young male skydancer named Shade while she was staying there, she was less enthused with his charm and easy going nature than others were, although he was very handsome and could have had any dragoness who caught his fancy. her interest peaked when he sought her out rather than the dragoness who were tripping over themselves to get his attention and drooling over him as he passed them by. she sat in a corner and watched as he pulled a loot off his back and sat his cap on the floor in front of him for coins before playing a lovely melody, upbeat and cheerful, it had many a young dragoness dancing with their intended before tapering off into another song, slower than the first. many dragons put a few coin into his cap before wandering off and Rose watched from her corner as the females went to pout prettily at him and show generous amounts of scale, she wore her dark silks as she did most nights and slowly approached him to drop a few coins.
Rose moved slowly and allowed her hips to swing temptingly as she left the tavern and disappeared into her den before the male could find her. this became a game of sort to the two, coming together to the same tavern and disappearing before the male could catch her and she enjoyed teasing him. Rose made her choice to end their game before it grew tiresome and listened to him play again and again dropped a few coin in his hat, but this time she waited at the doorway just long enough that he would catch up easily. he found her sitting on a tall cliff overlooking the sea and she smiled, bidding him to join her on her perch as she looked out to the stormy sea and the beautiful moon and stars.

This began a odd kind of flirting between the two, they would tease and mock each other unmercifully and he often frustrated Rose to no end, but she enjoyed this game. they didn't always act this way, sometimes, if he was upset over something, Rose would simply sit beside him and rest her head on his shoulder; they often did this while sitting on the cliff, offering comfort and simple companionship. Rose didn't think much of it when the teasing and mocking lessened as they got closer, she was shocked that he wasn't bothered by her attitude or the stinging comments and that he had been able to stubbornly keep up with her. They spoke long about things both in and out of the village, both past and present were topics although she didn't tell him much of her past, she admitted that her father was a Captain, brave and raging in battle, but strong and gentle with to his family with his own ship and that many of her brothers followed in his foot steps. she also told him of her mother, loyal and beautiful, and how her mother had followed her father faithfully on his many adventures, although many of her daughters followed in her foot steps rather than becoming warriors. she also told the male legends of the Viking Lord and his Siren and the children they had raised and left behind, some came back to them as Captains of their own ships and some died in battle while others took to the sea to lure others to them as their mother had. Rose told one story that wasn't well known of the lost daughter, the one who forged her own path because she had no choice if she wanted to live and what had happened to make her loose her way her eyes were unfocused as she told these stories as if lost in the past.
The male, Shade, listened and asked how the Lost daughter's tale ended, Rose only smiled and claimed she had never heard the end; Shade only chuckled and claimed the tale was an interesting one. Rose had simply smiled, she had almost forgotten her past with everything that had happened and all she had had to do, her memories were the faded ones of a child as it was, but she wanted to remember her past and clung to what she could remember. Shade pulled a harp out of his back pack and asked if she could play, when she admitted she couldn't Shade taught her and claimed she would have to perform with him as she was a natural, she smiled and accepted the offer before offering the harp back, Shade told her to keep it. Rose began going by her real name, although many still called her Rose and always would, she played her harp with Shade and his lute as he sang and recited poetry and told stories to the crowds that gathered to listen and give some coin.

Nanna planned to leave the small village with Shade, the male had moved into her den instead of staying at a Inn and the two had gotten close while they planned where to go. she even began singing softly to Shade, not because she was using the song to drive him wild, she didn't have to, but because he enjoyed her singing; the crowds often went wild when she sang and they earned a decent bit of treasure when she sang. Rose was happy as they packed what little they had and started traveling to a new area, stopping in clans to earn coin with his stories and their music, her powers were not as strong as her mother's and so while she could have lured many to her if she focused, just singing would only cause her to become the center of attention and possibly draw a few unwary travelers from the streets as they passed by unless they were focusing. normally when they stopped she would sing and dance with out without playing her harp and her dancing made her silks shimmer enticingly.
When a bad storm hit the two were separated in a rush of dragons trying to get out of the down pour, and then the ground trembled and the sky flashed with lightning while thunder rumbled in the sky. the dragons around her seemed to freeze as they all waited for what would happen next, the sea seemed to rise up as the storm worsened before the waves she had so loved watching crashed against the village and swept dragons and debris out to sea where the hurricane battered them unmercifully. Nanna tried to find Shade in the crowd, but could find him nowhere and she felt fear well up inside her at the thought that the young male may have been lost to the sea and lost to her forever. she moved quickly to ask if any of the survivors had seen him, but none had and with the lack of information she felt fear and uncertainty threaten to drown her like the waves of her beloved ocean, the waves leaped up again and swallowed her and many others in their unforgiving and icy claws before they could run.

Nanna was battered and pushed first one way and then another, she lost track of which way was up and which way was land, her lungs burned for the air she so badly needed. she broke the surface and tread water for awhile realizing she was in the eye of the storm and that it would get worse from there, she wasn't even sure how she had survived, but knew she was tired and that she needed to find land again. once again she was thrown around by the sea and soon her world faded to black as she allowed the ocean to lull her to sleep as she had when she was a small child on her parent's ship. Nanna woke again on a shore she didn't recognize and wondered again how she had survived such a storm, she was shocked to find she still had her harp and it was in good shape although her silks were in tatters. she went to a market place to find out where she was and found a tavern with a old male guardian and his crew, she bought passage on Captain Jack's ship with her experience and talent; although she said nothing of who her parents were, not wanting to remember painful things.
The male's name was Jack and his ship was The Black Wolf, she spent several weeks on the Wolf and became friends with Jack's daughters as she worked for her passage, she didn't particularly care where she was going, knowing a town or clan would be near by when they docked the ship. she wondered at how long it had been since the storm, six months, six months since she had lost her lover and her heart to the sea which she had longed to go back to. she wondered if she would ever heal from the wound loosing Shade had left, she didn't pay much mind to the talk around the town of a young male who had yet to choose a mate, but had his pick of the unattached dragoness. she found this male while she was singing in a tavern and playing her harp, unaware of the world around her as she got lost in the past until the familiar sound of a lute reached her and she smiled warmly for the first time in a long time. the male playing the lute was Shade, he had survived and found her months later, and she had found her Bard.
