Mavis stepped between his sleeping clanmates, careful not to tread on any tails or wings. Once he neared the entrance, he picked up the pace. By his calculations, a comet was supposed to fly over Sorneith tonight, and he didn’t want to miss it.

Outside, Mavis shivered in the night chill. “This’ll be worth it,” he reminded himself, carefully selecting a place to lie down. He stretched out on the ground and focused all of his attention on the sky. The innumerable multitude of stars above mirrored the sparkles in his scales. Maybe that’s why he liked them so much.

The tiny violet fireflies that always seemed to gather around Mavis flickered gently, adding to the peaceful atmosphere. Mavis breathed deeply as he searched for the elusive comet. He loved nothing more than his nighttime ventures. Keeping his eyes locked on the heavens, he settled his head between his front legs The comet wasn’t due for another few hours, at least. But, he had the stars and the fireflies to keep him company.

Mavis jerked awake. He didn’t remember falling asleep and yet, there he was, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. Scanning the skies frantically, he was relieved to find that he couldn’t have been sleeping for longer than ten minutes. Combing a talon through his beard, Mavis sighed. If he had slept any longer, he could have missed the comet entirely.

“I have to stay awake,” Mavis mumbled to himself. He busied himself by seeking the constellations and imagining what their corporeal forms would look like. His gaze softened when he found the cluster of stars shaped like a Guardian’s face. It reminded him of his mother.

As Mavis reminisced about days long past, a twinkle caught his attention. He turned and gasped, eyes widening. The comet was just as beautiful as he had anticipated. He stood, overtaken by excitement. Out of nowhere, his eyes began to water. The comet was arching just over the Guardian constellation. She was smiling down on him from above.

Mavis has a tiny constellation in the shape of a heart on his left wrist, the last place his mother touched him. He may or may not have noticed it, if he did he wouldn't tell anyone anyway.

Some nights Mavis just can't fall asleep, so he'll go outside to look for a symbol in the stars. Other dragons might think Mavis is a little odd because of all the seemingly unrelated connections he draws. Even if there's no symbol in the sky, looking at the stars up above remind Mavis of just how small yet wonderful the world is. Somewhere, there's another dragon looking up at the same mystical sky.
