what a blacksmith is and isn't
Queen of the Forges

Current master of the Whitehearth. Head of the House of ???, manages the Forges District. Very dedicated to her craft, enjoys the effort and satisfaction of taking crude material and working it into something meaningful. Loves making decorative glass shapes in her free time, which tends to be rather often as she's somewhat lazy when it comes to actual work. Might look pretty and elegant outside the forge, but once inside she makes it clear she's the boss. Fooling around in her district won't be tolerated, and the hammer she carries can dent skulls just as well as it can metal.

Scoria - noun; a cindery, vesicular basaltic lava, typically having a frothy texture. noun; slag separated from molten metal during smelting.

PC -> Ridgeback obtained 2/14/2017, 9:01 AM.
Old sizes: 6.72M / 6.89M / 501.76KG

Description:

The Forges District's name is actually something of a misnomer. While there are a great deal of forges present within the district - along with many skilled blacksmiths able to churn out weapons, armor, and other metalworks - the district actually relies on glass and other earthenware/stoneware items, both useful and decorative, as its primary exports. It houses all sorts of furnaces and kilns necessary for each craft. Many are personal property and privately owned by the district's residents, but there are several of each type that are publicly available as well. Tools are provided, and anyone is welcome to use a station at a slight fee, provided they bring or purchase their own materials and clean up afterward. For longer projects, station reservations are also available.

Of the district's exports, it is its glassware that tends to attract attention. As Byzmara is in the middle of a vast desert, there is an abundance of sand available for anyone to take, so the desert supplies the majority of the sand used in various projects. However, since the boundaries separating Byzmara from other dimensions are thin and strange magic has seeped into its world over millennia, its sand can display unusual properties once refined and used. Lenses created from the Byzmaran desert can sometimes reveal that which otherwise cannot be seen, be it traces of spells or even spiritual entities. Glass jars and other vessels become more capable of holding magical substances without ill effect and trapping magical beings. Even certain types of glass weaponry become more durable and effective at harming what can't be harmed. As such, many glass products are desired in Sornieth to combat strange beings and magics.

The district sees a lot of traffic from Fire, Wind, and Water dragons employed by district managers. These dragons are typically grouped into rotating shifts so that there are always at least a handful on duty to maintain stations, manage water/air pollutants, and dispose of any hazardous materials properly. Due to the number of forges and other stations in the district, maintaining the health of all practitioners and visitors is one of the district's top priorities.

Notable locations:

The Castle -

A large foundry at the center of the district. Its primary purpose is to create certain tools and a variety of parts for use in golem creation, but the workers there can easily shift gears with other molds.

Whitehearth -

A great forge constructed from enchanted marble. Soot and grime never seem to tarnish its surface, the cool stone still as pristine and smooth as it was when it was put into place. Weapons and armor forged here are among the most durable ever made, their quality surpassed only by the creations from the very heart of the Flamecaller's territory.

It was discovered long ago that if the forge is reserved for the use of only one individual - one master blacksmith for the duration of their lifetime - Whitehearth would confer a curious magical power to items crafted within it. Put simply, it is an enchantment against the whims of Byzmara itself. Shields and breastplates from Whitehearth are better able to protect their wearers from the shadowy beasts that plague the city each night, and blades and maces that have known its fires bear a resistance against Byzmara's mutable, arbitrary nature. What Whitehearth creates, Byzmara cannot change, which makes Whitehearth's offerings highly demanded throughout the city - especially by the guard. Lady Scoria is the current operator of the great forge, and it is by her goodwill that Byzmara's guard becomes better able to protect its citizens.

Misc. tidbits:

Each public station is marked somehow (some sort of sign?)

Scoria is the one who made Baine's new spear, and it took a hefty favor from Sevetrin for her to not only accept the order but to also complete it quickly instead of procrastinating on it.

Vinethorn lives on the outer edges of the district, although he doesn't have anything to do with the forges.

Flame Forger
Fire Metalworker
Fire Tome Sunburst Feathered Wings Fire Runestone
This Ridgeback has skin of hardened magma and a body temperature that could melt steel. Breathing a fine flame of white heat she melts ores and forms them into the ornaments of her trade. Her blood is magma and her eyes hot coals. She oversees the sleeping mountain, the dormant volcano of the Lair. With her abilities she has rekindled it into life to serve as her forge, dwelling in it's molten heart. Here materials are smelted and refined for use of the Lair. Her familiar prevents anyone from tainting the metal pool as she separates ore from rock and hardens both for later use. The unbearably high heat and volcanic gases invigorate her and she dislikes leaving her forge for how the clear air 'fogs her mind'. Whenever the mountain is smoking that means that she is hard at work melting down ores. Her familiar is her forgehand.
The molten is the ultimate in potential, it can be shaped any way.
