Deep within the Tangled Wood, along hidden pathways woven from towering brambles and haunted by flickering lights and distant, eerie giggles - is a ring of crumbling stones. Mushrooms grow in perfect, glowing loops around the bases of those stones still fully upright, casting their pale luminescent glow over the entrance to the cavernous barrow den that lies within the middle of the circle.
The mushrooms march in glowing lines to the edge of the pit, and then downwards, illuminating the way down – crumbling, carved obsidian steps artfully supported by living, twisted black brambles that have been groomed in a spiral around the walls of the barrow's entry. It was a place that no one living was meant to enter, but that hardly stopped the dragons who lair there…

LORE After making a deal with the Shadowbinder for the location of her Charge, the Guardian dragon Elke wandered the Tangled Wood searching for a place suitable to build her den. After some weeks of picking her way through brambles and mushroom groves, she wandered across the crumbling remains of a standing stone circle; tempting as it alone was, while investigating she realized that a sealed barrow den was within the circle. It turned out that it was no small crypt. She dug for days on end, moving soil and rocks and a few of the standing stones that had fallen, and in the end she was left with a massive obsidian seal set into the ground. Calling upon her magic, she reached out to the brambles that enclosed her find, and they rose up like living things which she set on the seal, roots and vines creeping into the etchings and cracks until the slab of obsidian began cracking under the relentless pressure. As the stone began to crumble, she anchored the brambles magically to the walls of the pit, building a staircase from the remains of the seal and a horrific trap all in one – what fate would find an invading enemy if the only way in was made of throny vines strong enough to crush the life from a Guardian, and under Elke's complete control? So she descended into the unsealed crypt, and found it much to her liking; deep within, in the deepest reaches of the complex, beyond forgotten libraries and rooms of alcoves containing nothing but bone dust, beyond the room where twisted black trees somehow grew and produced fruit without the benefit of daylight, lay a room floored in ornate tile work which depicted the phases of the moon and the pattern in which eclipses would fall. In the center of this room lay a pool, deep and black but for the dim glow of bio-luminescent fish darting here and there. Elke saw this place, and settled into the pool with a happy sigh – a perfect lair. Now, to begin building her clan. |
