Mostly I gather dragons that catch my eye and then put them in the Den to occasionally look at them and go "aw, so pretty".
The ones in the Lair are either 1) my Coliseum team, 2) just there to level up some Familiars, or 3) pairs I'm breeding to look at the pretty babies (and then sell them).
Note to people friending me to share research notes: I tend to let them accumulate and then share them in piles of 3, 6 or more for each friend all at once.
If you're working on a breeding project, I usually don't mind lending my dragons for a while if you need one (unless i'm planning to breed them myself soon or something).
I have a lot of dragons in my Den that are between 6 and 10 years old. :)
