The Ulricti Order

A creature of shadow, the Xumbre was created by the Shadowbinder as a gift, with the hope that such a lavish offering would protect her people from the Plaguebringer's affinity. While the Shadowbinder did not gain protection from plague, the Plaguebringer did gain a servant who, bound by oath, specialized in terminating all those who dared oppose the spread of plague.

Though the Xumbre is its own being, its natural form is ethereal, even spirit-like, and lacks substance. It requires a host to walk among the living. The Xumbre's consciousness takes aspects of its host's personalities into its own when they die, so its personality is the combination of those of every one of its hosts -- its original state lost and warped by the tests of time. While its hosts are alive, the Xumbre forms a sort of hybrid consciousness with that of its living hosts. An ancient family of imperials in the Shadowbinder's domain takes great pride in the fact that the Xumbre always chooses its host from their bloodlines. When the Xumbre is ready to take a new host, all those in the family who are young enough to be considered compete to become that host. The Xumbre gains a living body, while the host gains an extended lifespan and access to the enhanced elemental powers of the spirit.

Due to the occasionally warring nature of the Xumbre's consciousness created by the hosting process, its body requires a great deal of rest. For the purpose of protecting and maintaining the comfort of the Xumbre, there are dragons who are sworn to protect him. The dragons form the ancient organization which calls itself 'The Ulricti Order'.

Most members of The Order are trained as skilled warriors in the interest of protecting and aiding their collective charge, however there are some dedicated to the other necessary functions of equipping and caring for warriors and protecting the Xumbre. The dragons that The Order sends away are skilled mercenaries or dedicated warriors of other clans, as even those born to the Ulricti who refuse to take the oath are trained in the art of war from a young age.
